Forums - Nintendo - Will Next-Gen Cripple Nintendo?

Even during the Gamecube era Nintendo still made a decent profit. If they can continue that then at some point they'll have another hit like the Wii. It would help if they could actually follow industry developments though. Nintendo seem to be incredibly isolationist.

What a troll article! That really is a load of garbage. How can anyone without a crystal ball say that Ps4 and xbox720 will sell 170m between them yet the Wii u will sell only 20m??? Some people are past stupid! Also and more importantly, given their current financial situation, Sony would by far be the most likely of the big 3 to cripple themselves. What an idiot this writer must be. Is it a Pachter pseudonym?

In my opinion the N64 was not just the best console of the 5th gen but, to this day the best console ever created!

I think the threshold is probably around 20 million. If Nintendo sell more consoles than 20 million it is worthwhile for them.  But if they sell fewer they'll have to really come out with something innovative next gen or think about going 3rd party.

nintendo will always be the second home console after ps4 or nextbox.... both console have a lot in common in terms of titles and genre...

Why is there an ongoing assumption that the ps4 / 720 is going to come in and dominate? Sony is on the verge on bankruptcy, they literally had to sell their buildings in NYC & Japan, just to be able to survive. And microsoft has consistently played "me-too", & basically never originated anything new or substantial on their own (kinect wasn't even developed internally at microsoft). So basically- somehow Sony & Microsoft will unveil these incredibly powerful consoles which will be super affordable & go on to sell a combined total of 170million units? You've got to be freakin' kidding me. More likely they will release consoles which are watered-down PCs, but too expensive for the mass market, & both will sell miserably (worse than the wii u). The economy is currently much weaker than in 2005/06 during the start of the last generation, a $400-500 console will basically be dead-on-arrival. Look at the Vita & compare it to the PSP, it's doing absolutely horribly. By the time the ps4 / 720 are released, the wii u will look very affordable & have a decent line-up of software. They will snatch up the majority of families / casuals / female players / & any respectable "hardcore" player will own a wii u to play Nintendo 1st party software. The 720 / ps4 will basically fight once again for the FPS junkies / graphics whores (although most will switch to PC at a certain point). Nintendo will inevitably come out on top once again, & all the very loud Nintendo-haters on the internet will be scratching their heads wondering how they could be so wrong. As further proof of this theory, compare the 3ds sales to the Vitai

i agree with u 100%. i think nintendo might do a $50 price cut in aug/sept when wind waker comes out then with black friday/holiday deals its lkely u could get a wii u for $200-250 this holiday plus it eill have a solid line up of nintendo land, nsmb, zombiu, lego city, pikmin, wind waker, w101, wii fit u, and likely 3d mario/kart vs the $400 ps4/xbox that will have mostly slightly improved ps360 games and 1-2 exclusive games

Hellllllll Noooooo!

Nintendo is Unique! Sony and M$ imo will sell more but cripple? Nooooope! They dont have MK/SSB/Mario 3D/Zelda!!!!

Game cube had these game too, look how well that turned out. While it might have been decent for Nintendo, is certainly didn't help the company grow.

Now are they Doomed? No, not by a long shot. but it would be helpful for Nintendo to stay relevant if they had 3rd party support and a mix of core and family attitudes.

don't try to compare this to the gamecube days. first of all. they competed against  the highest selling (till 2012) consol, the ps2. they had a new rivale, the xbox. the console design and controller design was also not very appealing to many people. their games of their franchises were all new tries (sunshine, starfox adventures, metroid prime, wind waker, double dash, luigi's mansion, eternal darkness, etc.). these games were all good but many didnt like it cause they expected something different after the n64 era.

So PS4 and 720 will sell 85mil each, or more, but the Wii U won't reach 20mil?

These article writers just go for the hits, and that's sad really. The article isn't really based on anything solid, at all really. Everyone is getting all worked up but when the big games come out, it should sell fine by brand name alone. You can say its not the case for the GC, but that argument has been raised several times.

For now, it's far too early to call. Why do people not see what happened with the 3DS, and think maybe sales will pick up? It's not strong now, but as we have nothing to base it on (who is to say the other consoles won't be struggling the same amount?), we can't really say anything for certain.

Except one thing. Nintendo will not be going multiplatform. Not now, not ever.

What's sad is the fact that some people get blessed with the opportunity to get paid to rile up easily angered people like me, while others have much more boring jobs.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Nah, people thought that the ps3 was dead and now it leads the 360 77m to 76m! Same for the 3ds and soon the vita. It probably won't be as much as the ps4 but enough to make them strive through.

Think about everything you just said, and then you might realize how close to the gamecube the Wii U actually is.

I hate that people cannot help but pre-reference any Nintendo product without calling it a gimmick.

Do you know what a gimmick is? A useless feature that only exists for the sake of existing, IE, Sony's Move, which only exists to say "We have a remote too!"

Oh, and to the topic title: No.
