Forums - Sony - AMD on the PS4: We gave it the hardware Nvidia couldn't @ GDC 2013

The next gen console Hardware is this time indeed out dated from the release.

I won't consider GDDR5 RAM outdated and as far as my limited knowledge goes that too is considered to be hardware. DDR3 is still the PC standard.

Console hardware is heavily customised for their purpose. The absolute best hardware is not necessary.

I would love to see a Windows 8 PC with 256RAM run Gears, Killzone or Uncharted as well as a HD console.  I am not sure a W8 PC would even boot with 256RAM.

It's all about optimization... and cost.

OT: I recently purchased an AMD FM2 APU motherboard - not yet decided which APU to go for, maybe an A10.

I know the current APUs cannot yet compete with cutting edge stand alone Graphics cards and CPUs but as Intel and AMD continue to push the tech it can only get better. The idea of simply replacing one component for improved CPU and GPU performance appeals to me.

If APUs do reach the point where they become mainstream for high-end gamers the savings on production costs (and energy consumption for those who care for such) would be signficant.

GPUs are progressing at an alarming rate these days. You expect Sony or Microsoft to hold building their hardware until what? A week before release, so they can put the last released nVidia or AMD GPU in it?

Otherwise, maybe you wish to pay over 1k bucks for your next gen console?

Be realistic!

The PS4 architecture is far from outdated. It's the first system to have such an APU in it with this much RAM. And to get a gaming PC capable of those capabilities, you'll have to pay a lot more than what you'll pay for the PS4.

Just because PS4 doesn't come with a Maxwell GPU and an IBM carbon nanotube processor doesn't mean it's not new tech. -__-

Good for them

Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030

Obviously Nvidia can provide the tech, the contrary would be laughable...specially when Sony needs the best prices to build the new machine in its current situation.
Simply AMD went on desperation mode and Nvidia didnt counter-offer, so Sony chose AMD for its competitive price.
AMD is poor mans Nvidia, deal with it, not that it matters though...

I think nVidia have nothing close to the x86 APU approach that AMD have.

^ That's if AMD did not screw up like in the Barcelona architecture. I'm crossing my fingers that they can pull it off. Intel and Nvida need good competition.

There is no way for AMD to compete with Intel. They have chances with low-priced laptops or PCs but Intel is way off now in terms of performance. The P4 taught them a lesson they will never forget.

I am by no means saying AMD can compete with Intel at this point, and I am by no means saying I know a lot about what went on with these two companies, but as a fanboy of competative pricing, I'm wishing for AMD to come back from left field and show us that they have something up their sleeves. Hell, I don't care if it's AMD/NVidia/IBM/Sony, someone needs compete with Intel, because I don't want to pay $1000 for a pentium 2 (with MMX) again.
