The next gen console Hardware is this time indeed out dated from the release.

I won't consider GDDR5 RAM outdated and as far as my limited knowledge goes that too is considered to be hardware. DDR3 is still the PC standard.

Console hardware is heavily customised for their purpose. The absolute best hardware is not necessary.

I would love to see a Windows 8 PC with 256RAM run Gears, Killzone or Uncharted as well as a HD console.  I am not sure a W8 PC would even boot with 256RAM.

It's all about optimization... and cost.

OT: I recently purchased an AMD FM2 APU motherboard - not yet decided which APU to go for, maybe an A10.

I know the current APUs cannot yet compete with cutting edge stand alone Graphics cards and CPUs but as Intel and AMD continue to push the tech it can only get better. The idea of simply replacing one component for improved CPU and GPU performance appeals to me.

If APUs do reach the point where they become mainstream for high-end gamers the savings on production costs (and energy consumption for those who care for such) would be signficant.
