Forums - Gaming - NVIDIA: PS4 GPU 3x less powerful than Titan, but more powerful than Xbox 720

I see nobody read the article ethomaz posted, it was about cloud gaming. It had nothing to do with NVidia bashing Sony, They are providing PhysX for the PS4.

I don't get what nvidia is trying to do here. "Look how weak the ps4!" People realize that a system with a titan will cost a minimum of $1800 right? Assuming the ps4 is 400-500, that still puts it significantly less than a third the price.

also a GPU in a console gets significantly more performance than in a PC.  It's called optimization.  Also I don't buy a console for $400 or $500 expecting it to beat a computer that will cost $1000 minimum.  I buy a console for $400 or $500 expecting it to beat the previous console that is now $200 (guessing PS3 gets a price cut before this holiday).

Why are people compareing the 250 dollar ps4 gpu to the 900 dollar titan.
One is pc gpu and one is a console gpu.you cant compare them

Yeah they r but no one knows anything about new Xbox so they can't compare anything on rumores on their website I called it unfair and unreasonable

Sorry but I disagree because all the game industry knows what is the Nextbox... they have to create games for it... nVidia needs to create a PhysX for it... all the developer already have close to final devkits.

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this but I saw a couple times that the xbox 720 has a dual gpu.

PROCESSOR AND GRAPHICS - updated 26/03/13

As with the PS4, the Xbox 720 looks certain to use AMD graphics hardware. VG247 reports that multiple sources have confirmed to it that the console will use two GPUs in tandem, it goes on to say that these won't be used in the usual 'CrossFire' configuration seen in PCs. We're not sure about all this as complex hardware architectures have been the failing of many consoles in the past, as a simple architecture is easier for developers to get to grips with quickly.

In any case it's the RAM that really matters if the ps4 is using 8 gigs of memory, you can bet xbox 720 will at least match that.

The dual-gpu rumor is a late 2011 already proved false... no Durango devkit had dual-gpu... about the RAM the Durango always have 8GB and Sony did match that specs.

mid-end gaming PC now (months before its launch), low-end gaming PC in few years, platform flushed with horrible looking ports of PC games mostly with bad frame rate and or low resolution.

The PS4 buzz stinks with Vita type fiasco, platform hyped by many bought by few.

Steam Box if done properly can wipe the floor with PS4

Low resolution? The PS4 runs game in a native 1080P. ALL consumer TVs that don't cost an arm and a leg(the 4K ones) maximum resolutions are 1080P. Console gaming is mean to be done on a TV, not on a computer monitor, where you can buy monitors with better resolutions than that. So as it stands, 1080P is the highest mainstream resolution available right now, why would they aim for something higher, and since WHEN did 1080P become low resolution gaming? You're not even a good hater, because good haters at least try to make sense. And let's not pretend that PC doesn't get shitty ports either, because it happens all the fucking time.

The PS Vita had no hype outside the Internet, at all. Some of my friends never even heard of the Vita, and yet ALL of my friends know about the PS4 and are getting one. Also, if the PS3 is selling 100K a week worldwide at $250+ there's  clearly a demand for Playstation consoles. Once again, try harder.

Steam box won't wipe the floor with consoles, ever. The average gamer isn't computer literate enough for the steam box, and really the idea of upgrading your consoles when you want would confuse the fuck out of some. The steam box has NO exclusives, fuck, if I'm right then it'd be essentially like a normal gaming PC. There's no demand for it, only Valve fanboys and some PC Gamers will buy it.

Once again, try harder, improve.

higher complexity of graphics will force developers to some sacrifice so the resolution will be scaled down, remember the PS4 is only mid-end PC it has low-end CPU and mid-end GPU nothing more or less.

As for Playstation brand, well your evidence is meaningless and even this speaks volume about brand recognition, the problem with Playstation crowd is they are interested only in what is cool this matter for them, so their portable handheld  was overshadowed by some casual devices and even those who know about Vita and own one are interested in cool brands on their devices as was case of CoD: Declassified regardless of their actual quality, and this is extremely important because this crowd don't give a fuck about Sony 1st party games, so if some cool device became at sight the brand is finished as was in case of Sega.

Sales of Playstation well who are those costumers, are they new or only those who bought replacement consoles i don't know but if sales of their 1st party games are some indicator well it's not good for them although last year Playstation brand expanded every single of their 1st party game bombed on the market.

The average gamer isn't computer literate enough for the steam box, and really the idea of upgrading your consoles when you want would confuse the fuck out of some.

Agree and this is exactly the problem, the consoles became venue for illiterate mob to play horrible PC ports.

The more blood and gore the more MATURE and HARDCORE the biggest sales, it's so easy to address them

Proof you know little about the console market. Most of Sony's exclusives appeal to western audiences. Xbox owns the United States, Sony owns Europe and Japan. Japanese people don't buy many western titles, but the sales of Japanese PS3 games that aren't localized, and some that are, take up for the fact that Microsoft's western based exclusives outsells Sony, and even then, it's only in some cases.

The PS Vita is bombing because of price and poor marketing, and yes, some people are seeing handheld gaming is obsolete nowadays. However the  fact that some people never even heard of the PS Vita speaks volumes. The PS4 has way more hype and consumers behind it.

Mob to play horrible PC Ports? You mean, some of the console games that are actually ported from PC to consoles? Most multi-plat games look better on PC's and run at higher FPS depending on your rig. Yes. But do realize. Not everyone is a graphics whore. The only edge PC gamers use is graphics, frames, and lower prices. But console gaming has way more perks, and quite frankly I'm tired of PC gamers always boasting about their rigs. Makes me believe that they don't even have the PC they speak of, fuck I have a decent rig and I never brag about it.

Point is, consoles have more exclusive AAA games, are cheaper, better to play with friends and family and appeals to the masses. PC Gaming doesn't. Get over it.

proof? what a proof is this exercise in obvious and you call this proof? what a delusion.

well the PC has more edge, not only better gfx and superior framerate  you have modifications community mostly for free with some bang even years after the game was released on market and this add some value.

Of course they appeal to masses so what, my point stand, in fact in case of Playstation owners looking at sales numbers of their 1st party games they are hardly interested in their exclusives, they play horrible ports of multi platform games, screaming "Not everyone is a graphics whore." is extremely funny because they scream about superior gfx in their exclusives this entire generation and now they scream about 8GB GDDR5.

So my point based on actual evidence stands, they play mostly horrible ports of multiplatform games (in case of Playstation even for console standards) and my explanation, because they're unable to properly configure gaming PC.

As long as games looks good on the next xbox I could care less how much more powerful the PS4 GPU.

........Why stick to a weaker machine? New gen = new choices. Go for the one that offers the best value for money/what you need rather than brand. We are talking about tech here, not Nike.

You are entirely correct here. My apologies for talking nonsense about the power consumption bit.

No problem, Nvidia made a interesting step with Titan indeed but it did end up using more power than the GTX 680. I think this is the reason why AMD has passed on introducing an entirely new card this time, there is simply not a big enough step to take without a rise in power consumption.

:)

The TITAN is an interesting card indeed, purely because it was basically a shock release, rewind 4-5 months and everyone was expecting the next gen desktop series of the 8000 series from AMD (not the mobile/desktop rebadges of the 7000 series they have released) only about 2-3 months ago did we hear anything about this TITAN.

So in effect it's kinda a free lunch for those who are interested at the ridiculous price point.

I believe they've had this thing on the go for a long time in the Tesla based pro end GPUs and that's where the tech comes from, to combat theb Ghz edition 7970s from AMD which nvidia didn't anticipate beating the GTX680s in many tasks.

Anyway, sorry again about before, I thought you were just another "nvidia suck how dare they say horrible things" person, when they're just covering themselves. Sure it's not nice or respectable, but it's not exactly evil.

Indeed Titan's architecture wasn't even designed for desktop graphics in the first place, so kudos to Nvidia for getting it done. I think Nvidia is great(except for pushing 3dfx out of the market and buying them). I've actually owned Nvidia cards for years, Geforce 2 MX, Geforce 4 ti4200, 6800 gt, 7900 gt(witch i killed with a Vmod) and a 8800gt. I actually sold the 8800gt just to buy one back a year later because it still ran all the games great. I finally replaced that 8800 gt with a HD5850 when Sapphire build a seris of cards to get rid of the chips when the HD6850 launched and it cost me 100 euro's brand new. Even today you can't get that much performance from a 100 euro card.

The dual-gpu rumor is a late 2011 already proved false... no Durango devkit had dual-gpu... about the RAM the Durango always have 8GB and Sony did match that specs.

Indeed, that rumor came to be because of the APU design and they were expecting it to have a discrete powerfull gpu aside one combined with the cpu. Nobody expecting AMD to be able to fit a 100w gpu in an APU design. Also using one chip is much cheaper then using two.
