The reason is goes much deeper than that. You know, Nintendo never actually "took off" in Europe. During the NES days, SEGA dominated the European market with the Master System thanks to their sports games and arcade conversions and, after, with the Mega Drive/Genesis. In the 32-bit era and after it, Sony simply took SEGA's place with the PS1/PS2 thanks to piracy and sports games/arcade conversions. Nintendo never had a chance in that market, explaining why the european retailers don't buy Nintendo consoles to sell to the costumers.
