The lack of these big-name 3rd party titles is what killed the Wii.(Of course Nintendo had some part in this as well)

Even though Wii U is getting some big games such as AC and Watch Dogs, its still missing some major franchises. The ones it did get didn't sell very well at launch so I think the future of 3rd party support for Wii U won't be much different than that of the Wii.

If you call selling 99 million units "killed" anyway. It was a lack of software in general that caused Wii's sales to stall. The Wii didn't need big name third party titles to sell units. After 2010, the Wii's software releases slowed to a trickle, with only two releases of any note in 2011 and almost nothing at all in 2012. No major Nintendo titles, let alone third party. Coincidentally, that's also when Wii's sales went into a downward spiral from which it would never reover.

Just look at 3DS. All it needed was a price cut, Mario 3D Land, and Mario Kart, and the system started selling great. Not saying it WILL happen with Wii U, as it is in a different situation from the 3DS, but it COULD, and it's too early to say whether or not it will.

3DS isn't exactly lighting the charts on fire. It's only selling well in Japan. Everywhere else its selling horribly considering its 2 years old.

The 3DS has been continuing to out pace the DS worldwide last I checked, and has done quite well during the holiday seasons. It's not lighting up the charts like the DS was at it's height, but then again it took the DS more then two years to reach it's height.

This article gives a pretty good idea of the 3DS's success after it's price cut and the launch of it's flagship software titles:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2012/03/06/a-year-later-3ds-sales-make-it-an-unqualified-success/

Worldwde success, mind you. So yeah, the 3DS is selling well. It's not flying off the shelves, but the roughly 31 million units it's expected to have sold by the end of it's second year is by no stretch of the imagination "horrible".

In any case, this is all something of a moot point. As the 3DS has shown, and as the Wii U has shown this past week, software DOES drive hardware sales.

I think that crystal ball you have has a crack in it so I dont think you should use it to make anymore predictions.

Most the the sales it curently has are due to the huge price cut and the new 3DS XL. Now the momentum of both has worn off, sales have slowed to a crawl and its down YoY when it should be increasing. The 3DS will have a much shorter life than the DS and it will sell much less.

Sales have slowed to a crawl?!? It's beating everything else out there nearly every week.

I do agree that it won't achieve DS sales, as the times have changed, just as I don't think Sony will achieve PS2 sales again either.

Stop hating and start playing.

This is a weird topic. Let me dumb this down so it sounds even dumber than I think it is.

1. If Nintendo stops releasing software for wii u, will Wii U continue to sell? Hell no.

2. If Nintendo releases every game for ps3/360 in one year with new Wii u features, along with Mario Kart, SSB, Zelda along with all the other first parties games. Will that make Wii U's sales increase? Yes, it would.

I make bad threads.

SSB really went downhill after Melee....

I'll be clear. My intent was to spark debate between the ardent Nintendo fans of this site as they continually defend the dismal Wii U sales numbers. Why do you think I worded my thread that way? You really think I'm that daft? hahaha

Having an almost 200% increase in weekly hardware sales is awesome, but when you consider the actual units sold, the Wii U is still in a miserable position.

If you do not realize that Nintendo's first party offerings will not be enough to spring Wii U hardware sales upward against the future sales of the Playstation 4 and next Xbox, then you need to smell the ashes.

Software does move hardware. It is becoming increasingly clear that the quantity of premium titles for the PS4 and the next Xbox will far outnumber the first party titles available for the Wii U.

As you continue to read about engines that will not be making the transition to Nintendo's 8th generation console, I feel that the smell will only get stronger in your nostrils.

Now you may flare up on the forums with pride for Nintendo, but I truly believe they have lost this time around, and that the company needs to realize that the Wii U was a mistake.

Ridiculous.

Without the casuals backing Nintendo this time and without 3rd party support, the Wii U might become another Gamecube.

GCN= best home console

People tell me the Nintendo games on it sucked and that's why it sold so little

What, you've never played a single GC game?

I wouldn't say they "Sucked". I'd say that there were several (Metroid Prime, Pikmin, Smash Bros., Eternal Darkness, Twilight Princess) that were amazing, and then several (Double Dash, Sunshine, Wind Waker, SF Assault) that I PERSONALLY just never got into, for various reasons. As in tried but they just didn't do it for me, typically because they tried something new that simply didn't work or appeal to me when it came to that series. Then again, I kind of "tapped out" that entire generation. I played games at friend's houses, but I never owned a GC myself (was going to for TP, but wound up getting the Wii to play the GC version instead, since it was already out). And I didn't get a used PS2 until at least.....2004 or 2005? I just wasn't really into that generation as much, wasn't into gaming as much that gen, I guess. I didn't like the direction the industry was going, and think that direction has only gotten worse.

However, with the Wii, I got back into gaming quite a bit, mainly because there were a lot of games on Wii that, unlike GC and PS2, just appealed to me more. Some 3D games like Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3/Trilogy, even Skyward Sword (as well as the Wii versions of Ghostsbusters and The Force Unleashed) I really enjoyed. But what really sold me was the volume of more "retro" offerings on the console, from the VC, to many WiiWare titles like Konami's Rebirth series, and Cave Story and LaMulana, the 8-bit Mega Man games, etc. As well as the retail 2D games like Wario Land, Ivy the Kiwi, A Boy and His Blob, NSMBWii, DKCR, Super Paper Mario, Muramasa and both Kirby games. It just appealed more to what I like about gaming, and I hope that continues on Wii U. I own a PS3, and certainly like some games for it, but I don't see myself buying a PS4.

I think the point was will the expected software releases really boost Wii-U sales. Sure it will increase sales even if it's just 20k more for a week, but it won't make Wii-U sell 150k/200k week after week years in a row. Except for holidays and certain software launch weeks(mario kart etc) it will never see those kind of sales, at least that is my expectation.

PS3 is 7 years old. 3DS is barely beating that every week. BARELY.

As smartphones and tablets continue to get more and more popular, you're going to see less of a need to own a 3DS or a Vita. It's already hard to justify a purchase. What 3DS needs is free to play games to complement the Pokemon and Mario games. Not saying Nintendo themselevs should release free games, but let others do it.

A console that has had 7 years to grow its library vs a handheld that has had 2 years.

I know you're trying to make the 3DS look bad, but you're achieving the opposite.

From 2005 to 2006 DS sales doubled from 10m per year to 20m.(The 3rd year it sold almost 30m)

From 2011 to 2012 3DS sales went from 13m per year to 14m per year.(Now in its 3rd year, sales are slowing down)

Keepi in mind that 3DS already received its huge price cut and the 3DS XL. I'm not trying to make 3DS look bad, I'm showing you the facts. The 3DS isn't selling liek hotcakes like the DS. The chances of the 3DS matching the 3rd year sales of the DS at 30m are 0%. I
