GTAV on Wii U will be a definitive indicator of how far Take Two and Rockstar's heads are up their collective ass. Perhaps they have become smarter than the company that posted a loss the year that GTAIV came out.

Ummm... didn't the Wii U launch with a Mario title?  And not just any Mario title, but a 2D installment?

So if Mario is a hardware selling God, and the Wii U received the latest 2D installment in the best selling franchise of all time, then why have the Wii U's sales been in the toilet since pretty much the end of the holidays last year?

2D mario isn't a system seller. Put it like this. Nobody buys a wii u for NSMB but When you have a Wii U you buy NSMB (meaning its a game everybody adds to their library when they get a wii u)

The Wii U is out of the price range of NSMB's prime audience; parents buying for their kids. And almost nobody buys a console for just ONE game.

What I dislike about the term is two things.  Firstly that hardcore has become particular associated with certain styles of game.  For instance, Pikmin, Fire Emblem, and Wonderful 101, don't really fit into the realm of "hardcore gaming" although the people likely to play these games are likely to be more avid gamers than the average COD or Halo fan.  The terms create a dichotomy of games where hardcore is generally equated with realistic graphics, shooting/sports/racing genre, and rated M (or at least T). 

Hardcore and casual are also considered by most to be mutually exclusive.  Earlier today, I played some Wii Fit,a little Lego City Undercover, some Need for Speed Most Wanted,  and some Bioshock Infinite.  The "casual/hardcore" gamer divide doesn't really account for stuff like that.

There are clearly different audiences in gaming though.  It's obvious that many of those who bought the Wii had different tastes than those who bought 360s and PS3s. It's also obvious that there are a lot of gamers out there who won't be swayed by the list of games that the OP listed, but will be swayed by a new Mario Kart.  I'm not denying that certain gamers are different from others, and I don't think any sane person would.  I just don't like the terms we currently use to describe different groups.

Nintendo needs to start begging third-parties at this point. Especially in a point where they're mattering more and more nowadays. People don't just buy a console for 5 games, many core gamers want a library of unique games.

This urks me as a gamer because I was trying to determine which to get, a Wii U or a PS3, but since PS3 is getting Bioshock, and is $150 less, I'll be buying a PS3. This is kinda a shame since these consoles are ancient.

So Nintendo, go beg third-parties, market better and release first party games ALONG with them.

Tell that to the NES, SNES, GB, GBA, DS, and the Wii from 2009 and on (it replaced Wii Sports as the default pack-in Wii game) then.

a 3D mario is more the system seller, also you mention 2d mario games in the 90s (except NSMB of course). Anyway if you think about it for a sec, wat i was referring to was that some people wont spend $300+ and $60 to play NSMBU! Butttttt People that have a WiiU will get NSMBU to add to their library. Get me?
