Forums - General - Migraines (and what you do when you have them)

I've had both migraines and cluster headaches and it's no fun. Migraines I usually just have to sleep off when they hit bad enough, avoid all forms of reading, watching tv, playing video games for sure or other kinds of mentally taxing things.

A while back I didn't eat any sugar for a while for other health reasons, and a pleasant side effect was that migraines and allergies that have been constant companions for as long as I can remember were both almost completely eliminated. No idea if it would work for you, but try cutting down heavily on all sugars if you think you could. It was definitely worth it for me.

If you have a full blown Migraine you need to avoid light/noise. Painkillers like Paracetamol, Adpirin, Ibuprofen help to a certain extent but I wouldn't take them regulary they are pretty agressive (stomach, liver) and not very effective.

If you can't bear the pain or you really need the pain to stop to learn/work and you ran out of options. Call your doctor and demand stronger painmeds. Hydrocodone or Tilidine will definetly block the pain and are not harsh for your organs unlike the stuff I mentioned before.

Really sorry to hear that. I hear that there is some regular things that you can take a day to get rid of headaches but you really do need to take it every day. I forget what it is called but I'll look up what it is. It's something natural, i know that much.

Also Mgs in ingredients or msg, (I cant remember which one) triggers headaches in some people, so maybe try learning to read labels and seeing if that is in things you eat. Sorry that I can't remember. I'll try and edit this and come back later with more info. Good luck and hope you feel better soon

Sorry to hear that. I have some terrible headaches from time to time, since I wake up till I go to bed, and they are a real pain in the a**.

One thing that helped me is, believe it or not, getting a new pillow. If the one you use is old I strongly recommend you to get a new one.

Please excuse my bad English.

I get a headache every week from stress, luckily most of them go away with sleep. Exercise might or might not help.

My mother had a long history of very strong migraines, no prescripted medicaments helped her. A few years ago she gave acupuncture a shot and it worked. She still has migraine sometimes, but it doesn't last for days/weeks now and can be treated with prescribed medicaments.

It is pretty expensive though, you don't want to let it be done by an amateur.

I don't get them very often, but always not fun at all. I get one of the 'classic' kinds, and there are completly different from a regular headache.

I get some warning, and I try to get to some place quiet, cool and dark.  I can often stop them from that.  A cold rag on the back of the neck and/or forehead helps too.

A bit of an alternative things smelling some Essential Oils but it can really help me.  I find Peppermint or Mandarin (sort of like orange, but orange doesn’t work for me) sometimes work.  I also get a blend of peppermint and some other stuff that helps too - it's called 'Peppermint Jubilee.'  Sometimes I can stop it from getting worse with these botanicals.  I haven't found any others that help much.

Also, my Doctors tells me that many people use Cannabis aka Marijuana for relief.  If you live in a state or region that allows it, it might be worth a try.

Also, watch you sleep and eating patters before they happen.  Sometimes irregularities can start an imbalance that lead to a migraine.

They are rare but unpleasant.  One of my brother’s gets them too – and you can just see it in his face when he is in one.  He looks like a Zebra on a documentry, where the lion are biting and has the 'just get it over with already' look.  It's just so sad.

Good luck.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

playing games won't help a lot if you do have a migraine....
what kind of pain killers did you use?
maybe you can get prescription for something stronger like vicodine or norco...

I'm on vicodine right now. Last time I had this headache, I was on vicodine, extra strength (4x...800mg) ibuprofen, and amitriptyline (for chronic pain and/or depression) and nothing even dented the headache.

Basically I'm on what's left of the vicodine, but unfortunately, can't even afford to go to the doctor's for this again because it costs so incredibly much in the US ($140 just for a basic appointment), so by tomorrow morning, I'll be all out of anything prescription strength and be left with over the counter stuff.

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

Also, thanks for the advice guys. I've basically just laid down in a chair and stared mindlessly into the distance all day. It hasn't gotten too much worse today, so I'd like to think it has at least helped. Last time I had it, even though it probably didn't help in the realm of things, I tried playing a bunch of video games because generally with my headaches, it takes my mind off of the headache for a short time anyways. But I'd rather not this thing last 3 weeks again, so figured trying something different will be worth it.
