Forums - Nintendo - Don't compare WiiU and GameCube

The N64 also only sold about 33 million, so we have 10 years of track record here that Nintendo has a limited audience when they follow the formula of

1.) No "once in a million" home-run type of controller hook that creates new (perhaps temporary) audiences.

2.) Same ol' third support.

Without the hook of the Wiimote, the Wii U is just a return the N64 and GameCube generations for Nintendo, except the N64 even had Rare at least which produced some huge hits like GoldenEye for Nintendo. GCN and Wii U don't have that.

It's nothing personal against Nintendo either, consumers just don't like buying entire console platforms primarily for one company's games. It's a limited market, ask yourself if you'd pay $300+ for an EA console, Capcom console, Square-Enix, console etc. with mediocre developer support outside of 6-7 main franchises.

It's actually a credit to Nintendo that they're able to basically carry their console platforms to 23-33 million in sales on their own most of the time.

Lol, I don't know who hates me more for this thread. Sony fans who want to say Wii U is the next Gamecube or Nintendo fans who want to say there was nothing wrong with Gamecube. LMAO!

Hasn't it occured to you yet that you are simply wrong and no personal bias of other users can affect that? I think it speaks volumes.

Absolutely not.  Not a single person has made a letitimate argument to say that Wii U is anything like Gamecube.  Nintendo fans have said gamecube is great and it's games were great and I"m mean and shallow.  Sony fans have said Wii U sucks and it's not going to sell and it's a flawed system.  But no one has shown that Wii U's philosophy or it's exclusive games are like Gamecube's games.  The systems, the launch situation, the strategy, everything about the systems are polar oposites.  The results may or may not be the same, but the systems are completely different from each other, and no one has shown otherwise.  They have just bashed Wii U and it's chances or bashed my shallow view on gamecube.

Some of the posts on this thread from both sides are quite rational and spark good discussion.  Others, like your's, are just blinded by fandom and add no value at all.

We have, it's just that you refuse to accept them. GCN wasn't cool, it had the best hardware for the core gamer, but looked like a toy and had games looking a bit childish on the surface - nobody was excited about it. Wii U isn't cool either, it's hardware is a joke and no core gamer is excited about it, which is a huge problem, considering the casuals are done with home consoles for now. It's the same story. Nintendo has no target audience with either console. Everyone knows who will be buying PS4, who will be buying X720. But who is the target of the Wii U? Nobody really. The only people who are going to buy it are the Nintendo faithful, just like it was with GCN.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

This is a myth. Just Dance 4 has sold over 5 million since November on Wii alone.

Can people please stop comparing these systems.  In particular, I'm tired of the statement that Gamecube had lots of awesome games and didn't sell well, so how are games going to help WiiU.  The systems are nothing alike.

People say Mario Sunshine, Zelda: Windwaker, Smash Brothers, Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin, Metroid Prime and MarioKart DD couldn't sell Gamecube and they were amazing games.  I'm sorry, but they aren't.  Well, they may be great games, but I wouldn't know, because I didn't play them and didn't want to. I bought a PS2 instead.  And an XBox.  Mario Sunshine was a dorky name for a game with Mario using a watergun on vacation.  Zelda was a cartoon.  Metroid Prime may be amazing, but to me it looked weak and boring compared to Halo.

Now, when I saw Super Mario Galaxy, Zelda: TP and Wii Sports, I was sold on a Wii in an instant.  The realistic, epic-looking Zelda and the mind-blowing Mario Galaxy were spectacular.  Throw in New Super Mario Bros Wii for good measure and you have some serious 1st party titles that appeal to me and a lot of other people.

When it comes to Wii U, we haven't seen the major titles yet.  I would have every reason to believe that Nintendo has learned what sells and what does not, and Wii U will be receiving Wii-like titles that are system sellers.  The Mario will follow that path of Galaxy and be impressive visually and have an appealing theme.  Mario won't likely be going on vacation again, ever, especially with WiiU sales struggling.  Zelda will likely be a back-to-basics graphical showcase that sucks in core gamers.  No waterguns.  No toons.  As such, the games will likely appeal to a broad audience - the Wii audience - and move systems.

Also, the Gamecube was a purple lunchbox with a legoland controller.  I know some of you may have loved it, but most adults and many teens wouldn't touch it, rightly or wrongly.  No amount of good games could sell it.  Wii U is sleek, black (or white) and contemporary looking.  Give it games and people will be happy to have it in their living room.

I also dont understand why people Ignore the console design.   tbh it somewhat looks like some kind of toy.  It was purple and it had a green a red button  and a yellow analog stick  whereas the Xbox1 for example had transparent more stylish design for its buttons etc.

I mean I love the gamecube  the handle is somewhat cool  and the controller is awesome (its better than the PS2 controller NO OFFENCE!) but the toy colors...

Just look how much better MS's transparent or Sony's simple/modern design looks like compared to N64/GC toy-style.

Colorful yet stylish.                                                                Looks like a cheap toy.

Sure thats not Xbox1 PS2 and Cube comparison but it gets the job done.

Even when its the same device  making it TOOOOO colorful  looks like crap.

VS

quite cool                                                           really???

So you agree with me that the premise of Wii U is pretty much the opposite of Gamecube?  Thank you.

The Wii U's design is actually pretty mediocre.

The tablet looks like a kids toy. It looks like Polaroid's Kids Tablet (that's the actual name of this product lol).

The Wii U tablet is very much out of step with modern chic electronics like those from Apple and Samsung.

The console design for the Wii U is boring and dull too, it looks like a cheap portable hard drive.

And still moved 1.4 million less than Just Dance 3 and even 750k less than Just Dance 2 in its first 10 weeks on a bigger installed base. Besides, this is practically the only casual title selling anything (Zumba Fitness being the other) at all on the Wii right now and for the past months. Wii Fit Plus and Wii Fit have all but stopped moving, Mario & Sonic at the Olympics moved about 55k in 2012. Casual titles on the 360 and PS3 are also moving terribly slow, if at all. Brain Age on 3DS and other similar stories are also tell tale signs of the great change and market shift.

Casuals are moving/have moved into the tablet, smartphone, browser based and social gaming market, its hardly a myth unless you're one of those people who believe that a near (or at least very large) infinite number of gaming markets can co-exist. One emerging market always kills another, this is shown throughout all of gaming history (Arcades are the best example, Commodore/Amiga another). Its not coincidence that one market skyrockets when another plummets, its the natural order of any market and service (fall of Nokia and rise of Apple is a perfect example of this).

I guess you also hope and assume that casuals will arrive and purchase the Wii U in droves? They have no reason to. I'm not trying to put words in your mouth but this is the only logical explanation I can see for your insistence that casuals are still a relevant force on home consoles.

It doesn't matter if you fall on your face because you trip over a stone with your right foot or your left one. Nintendo has made the same mistake just approached it a bit differently, but it doesn't matter, cause the outcome is exactly the same.

Also, you keep saying that GCN had cartoony games and that was bad, but Wii U won't have them. Guess what? The games that are coming are Pikmin 3 (a typical cartoony GCN game), Wind Waker HD (still as cartoony as it was) and a totally new IP in Wonderful 101 (another cartoony game). Also so far the biggest release apart from 2D Mario is... a LEGO game. So far Wii U library looks more like GCN 2 than Wii, don't you think?

Seriously, do you know how to read?  I said Mario was called sunshine and Link was a toon.  Cartoon games are fine.  The big core games, 3D Mario and Zelda, need to appeal to more than children. On GC they did not, on Wii they did.  I expect those titles to follow the Wii template more than GC.

Geez whats with this dictatorship and censorship? People can compare WiiU to Gamecube if they want and they have good reason.

They have the same sales patterns and yes, software of 1st [arty games like Mario WiiU could have sold better but didnt

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.
