To be honest, I had a hard time using the Wiimote+nunchuk combo on Tri, and usually used the Control Pad instead, so my own preference is for that second stick.
However, I'd argue that the fact that the CPP has sold far, far, far less units than Monster Hunter Tri G did serves as some strong evidence that the Japanese consumer either prefers a single stick or, equally plausibly, is pretty indifferent. They did the Monster Hunter Claw for years on the PSP, so I guess they're pretty much used to it by now.
