oldschoolfool said: I don't get the appeal. I"m going to buy a game, because it interest me,not because of some artificial trophies. If you buy a game just because of trophies, then should'nt you be buying every bad game out there. like naugty bear are some disney game. barbie horse racing. lol |
it's more about adding some extra replay value. I'll confess that I always just selected normal or easy before, but now that I know there'll be proof that I beat the game on hard or that I did something in a time limit or without dying or not using a certain thing it incentivizes me. Now I go for that platinum and the hardest difficulty. I don't buy games just for them or even look at them as a factor however. That would just be dumb. They're something for me to think about after I've run out of other things to do. Although having 35 platinums when my next closest friend has 7 has taken the competitive side out of things lol. I still like to get them on my favorite series. Uncharted, Infamous, GoW, Ratchet and Clank, Skyrim, Sly, Resistance 3, I love having these games all platinumed because it makes me feel like there's nothing else left to go for and now I just sit back and relax while enjoying the series/game on easy.
I do however HATE 2 things. 1. When a developer makes you unlock the hardest difficulty by beating the second hardest. Why the hell don't you just let me play on the hardest from the start assholes!? You're just forcing me to have a frustrating, though satisfying when I beat it, playthrough twice! When I get past a checkpoint on the hardest mode I think "great now I've proven that I can do it and never have to again" when I get past a checkpoint on the second hardest difficulty to unlock the other one I think "by god that's going to be even harder when I have to do all this again!" 2. When they have one for reaching the max rank in MP. If your MP is good I'll play it regardless (not a big MP guy) and if your SP is great then I'm not going to trade in your game because I'll go back and play through it when I get the itch for a great experience. To me this shows a lack of confidence that you have to put a trophy in there just to incentivize me to play your MP. Especially in a very SP focused game like Tomb Raider. The MP is trash and yet they force you to trudge through MP if you want that platinum (which I don't do because I only play them if it's fun in the end and I'm not doing a hundred hours of MP just to get a trophy).
Bottom line is they're optional and if they seem like fun things to shoot for I'll go for the platinum. If I try a hard mode and it's just too much or not fun, or if it makes me do some ridiculous thing like never die in the whole game on hard mode, then no thanks. No one should buy a game for them, but if they enhance your experience for an already excellent game then more power to you.
