If "always connected" means hibernation, then what does "always on" mean

Around the Network

Maybe its the same thing PS4 has where you can put the system in a certain mode and it stays on so you can resume later.

If you turn it off then a Microsoft employee will come round your house and turn it back on.

Installs are not new at all and most PS3 games require an install but i guess we are ignoring that. I think what they are trying to do is make it more like PC where you can just click on your games from your hard drive to change games rather than changing discs or possibly quicker load times. That is a good thing and it is interesting that I hear people complaining about that when PS3 requires installs and that is only for quicker load times and nothing else. Then you have PC which blocked used game sales a long time ago but we will ignore that too i suppose. Hating on MSFT is the cool thing around here right?

Installs could potentially block used game sales but until that is confirmed I'd say it is best to not jump to any conclusions. I also want to point out that Sony has been pretty shady about the used game sales as well. From what I've understood about PS4 is that they are allowing publishers and developers to choose if they want to block used games. Now if that is true or not I don't know.

These two paragraphs have some issues Jay. To start no one likes the installs on PS3. I guess you ignored that it's one of the biggest complaints people have with the system. Also PS3 only installs a small amount of data, not the whole game. People are worried with nextbox that the HDD will fill up fast.

Blocking used games has more to do with other rumors while this just barely reaffirms its potential. Sony has flat out said millions of times they are not blocking used games. The shady part comes from the fact they won't comment on what third parties do.

I agree with this no one likes installing on the ps3 and the largest install I believe was 8 gigs, next gen games will probably be above 30 gigs. If the you can play while installing feature works well then it will eliminate one of the issues which is waiting. The other issue is the HDD filling up, my 250 HDD was filled up from some full games and more small games and the occasional big installs so having to install every game you purchase is an issue imo. Also since it requires installs it is pretty much guaranteed that it won't support used games.

I always thought it was a satate of hibernation...just like the vita; it can stay connected to the internet while on sleep mode

The biggest game installs on ps3 are 4 or 5 gb, most a lot less. It's a waste of space to put everything on the hdd.

I agree with most of what you were posting. Just wanted to point out that I have seen at least a couple PS3 games have 10+GB installs, and several that were over 5+GB.

Either way, fully installing a game would be like 20GB per game for a next gen console (I'm guessing here, but Call of Duty games on PC are like 12GB so it could be a tad less than 20GB). If 500GB is the standard HDD size, which it should since that is cheap, that's still room enough for 15-20 active installed games. If you are a hoarder and play older games or game a ton, I'm sure that new feature of playing games while they install would be good if you had to delete some games to make space.

My 320gb ps3 is filled up with normal game installs, a bunch of ps+ games, psn games, movies, videos, music, pictures. 500gb will be gone in no time if all next gen games require full installs.

Play while installing is a nice feature, although it remains to be seen how that is going to work exactly.
The main problem is having to delete stuff every time a new game comes out. Someone mentioned Steam. I have the same problem there, about 10% of my games are installed, the rest all deleted. 1tb is full with plenty of other stuff competing for space.

It's just putting up extra barriers when you quickly want to revisit an older game.

Exactly. I run into this problem on my 80GB PS3 all the time. I have to pick some games to delete in order to make room for mandatory installs for other games. And sometimes I am in the mood to play Counter Strike or Pac Man or BF1943 but then I remember I'll need to juggle games and wait for DL/install and then the desire passes. I don't want that on another console.

Noooo... can't be! It must be because they want to block used games and spy on us!

Do I really have to add /sarcasm here?

Sadly, probably yes.

To JayWood:

Thank you for posting this thread. I was tired of correting people in all the threads that were talking about it. You may want to change the thread title and information to be "Sleep Mode" though. Hibernation is a deeper state that consumes no power and requires a longer startup time. Also, here is some more info for your OP if you'd like. It is for those people who are worried about this using a lot of electricity on their bills by being "always on".

Just changed :)

One last comment I want to make. EA has some kind of deal with MSFT correct. now if MSFT does block used games and Sony does not I would not doubt if EA puts all of there games as timed exclusives on MSFT's console so all games are sold as new for let's say 1-6 months. It wouldn't be out of the normal if many publishers and developers would take the same approach so for all of the sony fans saying this is dumb, well it is not. it is a business strategy that will help publishers and developers (which they have been screaming about for years. Do you guys really not think they won't take advantage of this?) and in return help MSFT. So if they team up together (which they will) then it isnt looking so high and mighty for sony any more seeing as MSFT would be getting timed exclusives from many big games. So before you guys draw conclusions without even thinking them through try thinking.

If this made any logical sense (and it doesn't), this would have been done this gen when publishers realized how easy it was to pirate 360 versions of their games. Or it would've been done two, three, or four generations ago, when publishers found out how easy it was for their games to be pirated on the PC.

On the subject of the "Always On, Always Connected" rumor. If true, I don't see what the big deal is with this. My PC is always on and always connected to the internet. And my PS3 turns itself on automatically to download patches and updates at 4 in the morning. Either of these can be turned off by my choosing, so I'm sure the Next Box would have it as a mandatory feature.

The rest of the subjects of your post were either addressed by someone else, or completely ignored as they should have been.
