If indeed true, that's one down. Now we'll just need to wait for the shitstorm from consumers, and see what PS4 is doing.

If what is true and what does "one down" mean?

This rumor, and Microsoft being an almost immediate also-ran. Imagine what Gamestop would do if a no-used-games rule were in effect, why, they'd advertise the Wii U (and maybe PS4) all by themselves and marginalize the Durango.

The market for used 360 games is huge. If Microsoft kills that, game over.

So on a rumour you just killed off a console.  You're better than that.

Only if true, as i said. It's possible that Microsoft's implementation of this will occur in a way that won't alienate anyone (or at least not too badly). Microsoft has introduced some unorthodox standards to gaming and made them quite orthodox, and some things that sounded like bad ideas turned out to be really good ideas, but we'll have to see.

By the way... you know this specific rumor in this thread doesn't actually mention the banning of used games or need to be online right?

All it's talking about is essentially is that optional wii connect always online thing more or less.

I really don't see how "mandatory installs" (especially on a console) is going to lead to anything other than "no used games," though anything's possible.

It's probably more due to technical reasons quite honsetly.  Next generations graphics would have to be better and more complex, right?  So that means more data... which means either multiple discs or mandatory installs.

Chances are most PS4 games will have mandatory installs as well.

Otherwise Master Chief might just be returning Otacon's joke right back at the PS4.

Sony has the disc identifying technology on PS3 but didn't ban used games. They had that special gamer reward promotion thing where if you put a disc in the PS3, it could tell whether it had been used on another console before. So you were rewarded for buying brand new games.

Personally I don't see anyone banning used games. The negative reaction would just be too much to overcome. If you thought $599 RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDGE RACER was bad, yikes. The only way I could see someone making such a bad business move was if they had something bold in store for the new console. Like EA exclusive or something.

I've been saying this all along. It would have to be something HUGE too. COD??? :)

I LOVE paying for Xbox Live! I also love that my love for it pisses off so many people.

The usual suspects again turning this rumour ( with the second thread about in two days) to a fact so deep inside they can be happy because they hope the nextbox will fail. Very adult

Where there is smoke, there is fire. This is the 2nd confirmation of this rumor. Both sources are very reliable. Of course Sony fans want the next Xbox to fail, but that isn't the point. But we didnt make up these rumors, we are simply discussing them. Next time please add something meaningful to these converstations.

No, but it could change because third parties "demand" it.

did it change for nintendo or sony this gen? wouldn't third parties demand it of them too? I dont see why MS would be singled out for this or why there is reason to assume this when they haven't made any steps in this directon in the past.

We don't know yet about Sony, to be fair. They have those patents out there.

This is waht I find strange. Sony has the patent for RFID enabled BD-ROMs that get 'tagged' to a console and when asked about used games on PS4 give a very ambiguous answer about having discussions with publishers nobody bats an eyelid, but then comes an unconfirmed rumour about an MS console that doesn't even officially exist having mandatory installs and all of a sudden it's OMFG NO USED GAMES!!!1!!!!

But Sony already said their console plays used games. There are no recent rumors saying PS4 won't. Of course there may be discussions behidn the scenes about blocking used games and I'm sure they happened before the PS3 and 360 launches as well. Every time these rumors come up, whether they refer to PS or XBox, we complain about it being a bad idea and anti-consumer.

But these rumors say there is no way to play an Xbox 720 games straight from the disc. Yes, many PS3 games have mandatory installs but these are PARTIAL. They dont' install the full game since that would take up way too much space. Yes, some PS4 games will probably have mandatory installs but they'll be partial just like on the PS3. So unless Microsoft provides a huge HDD then this is a bad idea.

games arent that big. 500 gig drive will be more than enough for most people. It would be enough for me and I buy a lot of games. only have 700 gigs of my current pc filled, and I have a lot of games installed. the hardrive wont be an issue

Games this gen were limited by the Xbox 360s DVD format. Next-gen even the Wii U supports 25GB discs. Expect the size of all games to rise as they have higher res textures, bigger worlds, higher quality audio.....etc. 500GB may be enough for this gen, but for next-gen, 500GB is the new 160GB.

I game on a pc. its not limited by the 360 or the ps3. 500 gigs will be more than enough for most gamers.  I cant find an average size for PC games so I can only go off of whatI have installed on my pc. But I have 700 gigs of used memory (this includes all programs, movies, os etc) and I have well over 50 current gen games installed. the attach rate for the 360 is 9 or 10 games I believe. 500 gigs is plenty of space for 10 games.

Believe it or not, even PC games were limited by consoles like the 360.  Plus there's that DLC many people buy. You can expect DLC sizes to go up as well. Also if Microsfot wants to push for entertainment apps, movie/tv shows downloads will take up a lot of space as well. 500GB is not enough for 5+ years. You'll fill that HDD up pretty fast.

306.8 gigs and you can install the top ten biggest pc games. That leaves almost 200 gigs for other stuff or for growth of games. I still say 500 gigs will be plent of space for the average user.
