And that's the thing, to me.  These days, we get so many people gushing over these "games" that place so much emphasis on graphical achievement, mind blowing set pieces, and breakthrough technology instead of gameplay (and yes, I am aware that games can have both--not directed at you, FOX, just anybody else who's ready to pounce on me.).  When you look at games of the past, the ones that stand out as timeless aren't the ones that broke new ground graphically.  They're the ones that got gameplay down pat.  Your Super Mario World, Street Fighters, Tetris, Pac Man, Link to the Past, etc..
Loving a game based solely on presentation (which, let's face it, is what Uncharted does best) is like loving a woman based solely on her outer beauty.  You can overlook a LOT of flaws because the outside is so good looking but, over time, the beauty is going to fade.  Prettier things will catch your eye.  Then, you realize that what you fell in love with was really quite shallow to begin with.
Make a game first and focus on presentation second.  That's how you create a timeless classic.  Ten years from now, I would probably rather play Prince of Persia on Gamecube than Uncharted on PS3.  One will still be a game.  The other will be an outdated movie.

Suggesting that Uncharted is nothing but a presenation is moronic.
Hell, even games like Heavy Rain are more than a presentation. although much more so than UC.
I'm astonished anyone even suggested this and won't even entertain a proper rebuttal. Just a stupid, stupid thing to say.

Okay. I respect your opinion.

everyone is entitled to their own opinion but how anyone could call gameplay like this movielike is beyond me honestly

sure the sp can be restrictive at times but if anyone is looking for just raw gameplay there's coop and competitive multiplayer

gameplay within these modes so far has imo been unrivaled in most other games i've seen imo

personally i think the people that say so just suck at mp games because honestly if you're just looking for raw gameplay and nothing else then your priority should be mp games or modes

edit: btw i have never liked the uncharted series because of set pieces or graphics i have always liked it because of the gameplay

I never played multiplayer.  :(

not talking about you specifically but i really do think that the people that i see who claim they are into gameplay oriented experiences should try more mp games or modes as i said before mp is usually just about gameplay whether its uncharted, CoD, smash bros, battlefield etc etc etc

i find it really strange maybe even contradictory that often they are the same people that hate mp

Personally I think both games do what they were TRYING to do very well. One was more geared more towards everyone hence the easier platforming and puzzles plus over the top action with lots of set pieces and cinematic in a linear setting...

The other seems to me to pull more from the book of old and please another audience. More complex in the forms of tools and their usage. More complicated puzzles to solve and more open with the world. Let's you make more choices on how you want to play and decide how you want to go about it.

The story one is tighter because it is so linear which is not a bad thing by any means. And has the characters to help the story and make it more enjoyable even more. The other has a deeper story but it is not as tight due to it being so open...

Yet BOTH are AMAZING games that should be experienced by EVERY gamer......as to which is best....as with everything that boils down to everyone's personal opinion....and with that being said everything you have just read is just that...my personal opinion.....

The games play a like in some areas but it's nice to read someone go in depth about how different they actually are and that while Tomb Raider borrows some elements from Uncharted (just as much as it does other games like Batman or RE4), it feels entirely different in areas that actually matter. Areas that focus on gameplay.

Uncharted does some things better but to me they are areas that are irrelevant to the Tomb Raider reboot. Uncharted has better support characters, but does Tomb Raider really need a strong supporting cast? To me Uncharted is kind of like Sahara or National Treasure. There is one star but the whole team is really the focus of those movies. Tomb Raider is more like Indiana Jones. One central character and then some support people in the background. Plus the plot of TR doesn't really lend itself well to support characters. You're off on your own too much and most of your interaction with other people are enemies.

Uncharted also has more epic set pieces but I grew tired of these after Uncharted 2 when there were so many cool looking places off in the distance or great buildings in the background but hey you wanna go there and check them out? Too bad, they are not on your set linear path. So unless one of you easy mode platforming lines takes you there, you're SOL. In Tomb Raider the set pieces are nowhere near as prominent or grand in scale but you can at least go and check pretty much everything out.

From what I have played of the MP, Uncharted is better. But I have barely played the TR MP, just as I barely played U3 MP.

On the other hand I give Tomb Raider the edge in sound, combat, platforming, puzzles, and enemy AI. All things important to the actual gameplay. I'd easily rate it above U2 and U3, idk about Drake's Fortune yet. We'll see, I am about to wrap TR up.

From what I can tell from this post, Tomb Raider is superior in most of the ways that matter.

The ways that matter to you personally or the ways that matter in general?

To me and the gameplay of its genre.

I think what me and d21lewis are suggesting that the gameplay of Uncharted in general is either not up to par with other action/adventure games or too different in style and structure to invite comparsion (perhaps it's closer to Resident Evil and Gears of War than anything else, really). Ultimately, and this is totally my opinion, I believe Tomb Raider does a better job of nailing the compelling cinematic and deep adventure-style gameplay.

But from what I see, Uncharted still has most action/advanture games beat in multiplayer The only strong competition is Assassin's Creed, though.

This. I absolutely agree that both games massively succeed in what they set out to do, which honestly makes them very difficult to compare quality-wise. I'd like to use the standards of their genre as a means to compare, but I think Uncharted might be misclassified as a action/adventure game. I do think the strengths of that series are in line with third-person shooters, while Tomb Raider has always been about adventure game elements.

Single player and multiplayer are too different to compare. Multiplayer is about competition. Co-op may appeal to single player fans, but I at least still prefer to play by myself and enjoy the gameplay, challenge, story, etc. alone.

I think both are really solid but Tomb Raider plays like a much more refined Uncharted. For starters - while linear it doesn't feel like it's forcing you to go down a singular path at every turn like Uncharted does and the combat in Tomb Raider is actually fun (that was always the biggest flaw in Uncharted for me). The controls in general are better too.

Graphically they're about on par, though Uncharted has a lot more variety.

Story, set pieces, character and voice acting wise Uncharted wins hands down. In terms of Pacing, Tomb Raider is slightly ahead.

So if the next Uncharted plays like Tomb Raider or the next Tomb Raider is written like Uncharted, we're in for some excellent games.
