Uncharted was originally a 'fantasy' game

Uncharted has become the series it is today thanks to Sony feeling pressure from the success of Xbox with its 'gritty shooters', an ex-Naughty Dog developer has revealed.

Talking exclusively to Play, Don Poole, former Environment Modeller at Naughty Dog, explains how Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was originally a 'fantasy' game until orders came from Sony to make it more 'realistic'.

"We were talking about a more 'realistic' game in terms of how it was modelled and rendered but the concepts were much more far out. One was a forest world where the antagonists lived underground," explained Poole.

"It had elements of Tolkien in for sure. Sony kept pushing for a more realistic game in all respects. The market had changed a lot by then. The demographic was older and gritty shooters were really dominating. Sony wanted very much to get into that market share, it pushed all of its developers in this direction."

"So the big push from Sony, not just at Naughty Dog but at all of Sony's development companies at the time, was to craft games for PlayStation 3 that were much more realistic. The pressure from Xbox's success with gritty shooters was a very real force on our direction at that time."

Seems Sony/ND has MS to thank for the success of Uncharted. What an M Night SAhjsnkndknkilan twist.

Lol what.

Uncharted is successful because of lot of things. Not just because it is a third person shooter. You don't see other tps being anywhere near uncharted's success, other than gears of war.

It doesn't say MS's influence made Uncharted a TPS, it says it made it more realistic.

If you think Uncharted would have been as successful if instead of Nathan Drake raiding tombs and collecting treasure you had Fluffy McFlounderson fighting underground forest creatures.. meh.

Of course, in a thread where a game like Tomb Raider is being called an Uncharted clone, even though it plays nothing like it, my comments about that MS influence seem pretty par for the course.

Is everyone butthurt because Tomb Raider is better than Uncharted? or its just me?

it has more playability than all three uncharted games, seriously guys stop bitching and go play it, its not a ripp off , its much better.

It isn't better than Uncharted, Uncharted has better story, better characters (entire cast), more refined combat, better set-piece action scenes etc etc.

Tomb Raider has tried to copy Uncharted but it just doesn't have the same talent behind it.  TR writing is crap, the characters are crap, the puzzles crap, the locations forgettable, the exploration a complete falsehood.

Simply put, TR was better off when it didn't take itself seriously and had an over the top Lara with over the top settings, monsters, real puzzles and platforming, not the inferior Uncharted clone it is now.

A lot of people putting down TR aren't Uncharted fans, they are long time Tomb Raider fans who have seen the series suddenly abandon what it as all about.

QFT.

What is this opposite day? I didn't get the memo.

Don't you guys realize that it was renamed and remade cuz of God of War: Ascension, right?

For some reasons i think that this game would have been better than the new Tomb Raider. Dont get me wrong i didnt think the new Tomb Raider is a bad game but it has so much potential left. It has left me with a bitter taste after i have played it.

No its not just you. That's been the reaction of Uncharted fanatics everywhere. Idk if I'd say its because it's "better" since that is purely subjective, but it clearly rustled some jimmies that this game they have been blowing off for months as some cheap Uncharted knockoff is actually an incredible reboot that is nothing like Uncharted, and is getting great acclaim critically and great sales. I mean look at one of the first replies... apparently Uncharted was the first game to have elements of mystical legends or magic. Nevermind that these things have been in Tomb Raider since the 90's when the series began. It's only in there now because Uncharted actually invented it lol.

actually uncharted fans are, for the most part, the most ones excited about this game. and whats wrong with the first reply? he just stated a fact that just like this game, in the beginning of the development the addition of phantasy was considered and at some point wanted, and just like this game the developers/publisher decided not to go with it

"it's only there now because uncharted actually invented it lol" what an ignorant statement, these concept art where not shown on this forum until this thread, so the uncharted "fantacis" who posted in this thread are the only "fantacis" to talk about this concept art, where did anyone say that uncharted invented fantasy? taking into consideration that uncharted doesnt even have fantasy in it?! honestly this statement is so ignorant im finding a hard time explain how it is

Stopped reading at the bolded.

No way you are serious lol.

I am an uncharted fan and I am very excited for this game so what's wrong with uncharted fans being excited with the game?

Then what are you trying to imply here?

Don't confuse fan with fanatic.
