Trying to achieve success by pretending to be a PC (singleplayer/level-up/pay2win gaming) is not how consoles kept videogames alive.

And tablet games don't have more than their fair share of 'always connected' games?? I can't play a lot of them just for that reason (doesn't work in subway).
They're a successor in terms of many being built around getting people to pay as much as possible. Indeed, free-to-play/pay-to-win as a whole is essentially an evolution of the arcade machine; rather than paying to play the game at all, you have to pay to get the most out of it.
