Phantasy Star Online >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Monster Hunter > Ragnarok Odyssey.
*edit*
Another comparison to Monster Hunter would be Dragon's Dogma, since boss monsters are a huge focus in both games, yet they're better in Dragon's Dogma and there's far more to offer in the game than just amazing bosses.
Dragon's Dogma >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Monsters Hunter.
Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen comes out on April 23th. Includes the original game, all DLC, new classes, new dungeon, new monsters and bosses, more equipment. $40 MSRP.

The game is designed to be playable even by those who are not too skilled at action games. These types of players can recruit strong NPCs and let them do the fighting during combat as they watch over the battlefield.[12] Players have access to 40 to 50 hours of main quest play and up to an additional 70 hours or more of side quests.[10]
[edit]Multiplayer
Although Dragon's Dogma does not feature a direct multiplayer mode, the developers have revealed that players can compete online with asynchronous encounters called "Events" via Xbox Live or the PlayStation Network. One such event includes the 'Ur-Dragon' in which the effect of each party's attacks will be combined until the Ur-Dragon finally falls. Players that deal the fatal blow will receive the maximum reward, but regardless all players can still obtain both common and rare items dropped by the Ur-Dragon when they inflict damage.
In every way, Monster HUnter beat it. Main quests can take you more than 200 hours + another solid 200 hours online. Co-op miltiplayer was super on Wii, Wii U will be better with DLC quests for free. Monster Hunter is a challeging game, that you can't beat it by yourself if you don't learn from it. No hack and slash will help you at all without strategizing. Best Dragon's Dogma review average 78 on metacritic, Monster Hunter on Wii with standard definition graphics managed 84.
I am not saying Dragon's Dogma is not a good game, but at least is not better than Monster Hunter Tri on the kiddy Wii.
And I don't even want to mention Phantasy Star Online.

First off I don't want you to take that I'm saying Dragon's Dogma is the best and if you like Monster Hunter better your opinion sucks, but just mentioning that as my own personal opinion. Another thing you mentioned was the sales. This is based on the sales of a brand new IP compared to the sales of a preestablished IP that the Japanese beat off to on a regular basis. Even then, sales really shouldn't matter when discussing a game because high sales doesn't equal a good game. You only need to look at games like Resident Evil 6 and Operation Raccoon City sales and gameplay for more on that.
I've only played Freedom Unite, but here's the problem with Monster Hunter and the 200+ potential hours of gameplay that it offers. There's something like six maps if you actually can play that long to go through them. As you take on quests, offline or online, you've got your gathering quests, hunting quests, etc. You do the exact same quests in the exact same areas repeatedly. You're repeatedly doing the same quests and upgrading your equipment to do the same quests at a higher difficulty.
When it comes to the monsters. Monster Hunter has you dodging monsters, then attacking, or dodging monsters, laying a trap for it to run into, etc, then just attacking at it. aside from the usual like throwing a paintball at a monster so you can keep track of its location. Can you climb the neck of a Hydra and cut away at it until one of the heads come off? Can you climb the back of a Ogre attacking at it? Can you grab onto a Griffin and continue to attack it while it takes to the sky, eventually crashing to the ground because of the damage you're dealing to it? There's far more diversity to the boss battles on Dragon's Dogma than on Monster Hunter. It's like Demon's Souls mixed with Shadow of the Colossus.

Dragon's Dogma might not have online and it's something a lot of people hope for, but as a game based on being completely single player experience, they are offering similar experience to what you'd get if it was online play with the choice between having allies. Does that mean that you're required to take the pawns with you? No. You can play through the entire game aside from the beginning without a pawn if you wish. Also, if you play through the game with pawns that are your characters same level, the game will have a good difficulty. You're not required to use rift stones to have a team of nothing but overpowered pawns that your friends created.
On Dragon's Dogma, the base of the game isn't just taking quests, killing bosses, etc. Exploration is also a major part of the game. If you haven't played it then Google the map. It might not be as big as the Elder Scrolls games, but it's also far larger than Demon's Souls and Dark Souls put together. I'd say the world map is more of a mixture the Elder Scrolls games combined with the Souls games. Not only is there a large world, but there is a lot of detail put into the world. Not just the randomness in detail as you'd expect from an Elder Scrolls game, but the detail you'd find in the Souls games, although not completely on the Souls level. What does Monster Hunter have to offer in terms of exploration other than repeatedly going back to the same areas and gathering the same items?
Also. Phantasy Star Online is way better than Monster Hunter. Universe/Portable is better too.
