A second hand 500gb hdd costs next to zero, shouldnt be a big deal.....the key word is should

they just released the system and already games are requiring you to change the hard drive. it was obvious from day one that this will be in issue yet nintendo decided to go with the extremely low memory choices. so much for nintendo going all out on the digital and online space like they claim they are doing

The thing is most people buy games on discs, people that need huge memory to dwnld full games are the minority, of the minority...you cant really blame Nintendo for not adding a big hard drive, minorities are not priorities....

As Per NPD

Physical software sales in February : 369  million $

Digital software sales : 319 million $

doesn't look like much a minory now does it ?

( And even for people buying physical, there are DLC out there that are huge, Mass Effect 3 last DLC is 3.3Gb..)

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Also Nintendo pride them self on being the most family friendly console on the market. How family friendly is it when some parent is trying to purchase and setup lego city for their child and just as they are about to download the game they are prompted with "An external harddrive is required to download this software. visit support@nintendo for information about storage options". Seriously after already doing a 5 gig update this is not looking like a very family friendly console. I mean shit it took me a couple of hours just to get the Wifi to work on the Wii U. I had set up the connection manually. It was so hard for me to do!!

I feel that would be a parent too conscious of gaming and I doubt that that is a majority. I feel a parent would look for a physical copy of a game along the Wii U console, let the little bastard open the present and let him do what he will with the game and console.

yeh but lego city is just the first. What about when an older person is trying to download the latest brain age or wii fit update and they are prompted with the same message. No other mainstream product on the market today makes you go out and buy a hard drive just to download something people expect a brand new console should have no problem doing. I don't really understand why they did included such a small hard drive. It's definetely not a very family friendly choice.

Seems like a budget choice to lower expenses. Bigger HDD, bigger cost. I recall updates that go to 600MB in the PS3, so a big updates + intalled games could present problems in the long run indeed. It could become a situation where you would need to sit down and be forced to choose what you'll have installed in the console and what is not.

In the end, it will all come down to whether the user believes that going through the process of dealing with the limited HDD space is worth the hassle.

Are updates downloaded automatically by the way? I guess they would give you the option of skipping the download in the worse case scenario.

Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

thats not true, digital sales have been growing a lot, ubisoft says that digital downloads of their games on the vita are between 15% to 20%. fire emblems digital downloads in the usa account for over 30% of its tottal sales. digital downloads are growing, and fast. and nintendo's limited storage doesnt really help it

Sooooooo, wouldn't these people have a significantly larger HDD than 32 GB already?  Especially if they want to download a 22 GB game?  I don't see how this is an issue.

Keeping digital copies of titles in the limited space of the console harddrive has always been a problem that was lessened for Xbox and PS3 gamers once the new models with bigger HDD came about. Seems the WiiU owners have a problem in this regard.

Maybe in the future revised versions of WiiU models with bigger storage will come forth and will allow to keep more games at the same time in the console's HDD.

Well, if Nintendo where to do it, it would be at least Q4 2014 for a 128 GB model with a price as high as $299 at most in price.

I know........I mean can you imagine people being force to pay up to $25 for a 500 GB external Hard Drive.

If you can't tell I'm showing how you are full of BS, because even a 250 GB external Hard Drive wouldn't cost more then $15.

It would have hardly have changed the form factor to have included a drive bay for an internal drive ,but whats done is done .

Research shows Video games  help make you smarter, so why am I an idiot

Where the hell do you shop? 250GB external HDDs cost about $150 on Newegg. Here's the link http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007601&IsNodeId=1&Description=250gb%20external%20hard%20drive&name=External%20Hard%20Drives&Order=BESTMATCH

I just found a 500GB Western Digital HDD on Amazon for $60 without even trying to look for a good deal, I could imagine a $25 if I look really hard and went around, shopping.
