Forums - Movies & TV - Wait, what? Console owners of Wii spend most time using it for streaming vs other consoles!

I remember it was about last year, when Major Nelson announced that people were streaming more on their Xbox's than playing games.  Well, that seems to be just part of the story.  And the Xbox 360 is used by percentange less than it's piers for streaming.

Users of the PS3 (24% of the time) and the Wii (32%) spent more time streaming than on the Xbox (13%).   So the PS3 steams more than the Xbox, and the Wii more than both?  I was rather surprised by the numbers.

Here is a chart and somewhat confusing report of 2011 vs 2012 uses of consoles in the USA.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

Xbox being in last place for streaming makes sense to me, because it requires a Gold subscription + the subscription for the streaming service. And the Wii has sold more, so makes sense that it will have larger streaming numbers than the PS3. Just gotta break it down really.

Current Game Machines: 3DS, Wii U, PC.

Currently Playing: X-Com(PC), Smash Bros(WiiU), Banner Saga(PC), Guild Wars 2(PC), Project X Zone(3DS), Luigis Mansion 2(3DS), DayZ(PC)

maybe because the Wii hasnt been getting any games lately that people started using it more and more just to stream stuff on it?

My Wii is a Netflix box in my daughter's room and nothing else.

Not really surprising, my friend's young daughter has a Wii in her room too and it's used mostly for Netflix Kids (she can more easily use the interface because it's point and click basically).

As far as I can tell a lot of women as well who bought the Wii in those early days when it was in the midst of the Wii Sports/Wii Fit craze nowadays basically just use it as a Netflix box also.

It's probably why Nintendo opted to develop things like Nintendo TVii and put emphasis on streaming functionality like Amazon Video and Netflix for the Wii U right out of the box.

It's based on percentages, not raw numbers, so number of Wii's sold doesn't factor in.

The Wii has a good Netflix app which has been around the longest of the Wii streaming apps.  The Wii now has Netflix, Hulu+, Amazon Instant & Youtube apps for video streaming.  The video quality is SD of course however it still looks better then your average divx copy.  The fact the Wii has these new apps makes me wonder why the new Wii Mini which is replacing the Wii at retail has no online at all to take advantage of the apps.  Maybe Nintendo will release a Wii Dii (digital) that only does video streaming and VC/WiiWare?
