FF XIII was not made to appeal to western gamers. It was made even more Japanese style than past ones. The battle system is still turn based and the game follows all the Japanese RPG tropes that appeals to the Japanese. Western RPGs are nonlinear and western gamers love big worlds like Mass Effect and Elder Scrolls, FF XIII is linear just like all JRPGs. The problem with FF XIII was it wasn't a great game. It wasn't a bad game, it just wasn't a great game. The only major difference between it and past Final Fantasy games is its lack of towns. All you do in towns is talk to people and buy/sell stuff and you still get to talk to people and buy/sell stuff in FF XIII.

I will not enter in discussion about that but FFXIII was developed with focus in Western Style... FFvXIII was developed with focus in Japonese Style... that a fact.

Lol, that's not a fact. FF XIII is SOOOOOO Japanese it hurts. JRPG have never been truely non-liniar. They have only given the illusion of exploration. WRPGs have always been very open and more about exploration than pure story. JRPG have always been more about story and characters than true exploration. In that regard FF XIII is far more appealing to the Japanese who prize story over exploration.

If FF Vs XIII turns out to be an open world with action adventure combat than it would be far more Western in gameplay than FF XIII.

I don't know. I really love them, I hope they will come back, but even if they do, the storylines have changed some in tone to fit more of what's popular thesedays... more and more RPGs take a serious tone. For me, I don't play games to read novels or to engage in serious thinking... for me, gaming is very much a relaxation sorta activity. I do it in-between things and I like the occasional RPG where the art is inspiring and beautiful and I have the power of suspense of disbelief, so being taken into an imaginary world is really nice... it doesn't have to be super serious all the time and I just like the scenery and the gameplay to take me into another world, not worry so much about the obvious non-sensical stuff.

My husband loves the Disgaea series, but it's all humor and it's confined to mini battlefields, so not enough depth for me... even though yeah, the system itself--I see it has a TON of depth... but as much as I like gameplay, I need a rich scenery and something to escape into. It's hard to do that with a strategy game... though I loved Final Fantasy Tactics... it's a little weird to compare the two though.

That's what I like about JRPGs too. What I've never liked are random battles and heavy state/turn based battle systems. That's why I like games like Xenoblade. It has all the qwurkiness that Japanese games are known for as well as an imaginative world with interesting, although cliche, characters but the battle system is active.

Maybe I'm wrong because I never played FFXIII... I'm just sharing what SE said... FFvXII is the FF more JRPG style.

BTW For me Demons's is a JRPG.

I used to hate them too, but I'm over it now. I was 11-12 when I first played my first serious RPG which was Wild Arms. I used to escape the battles because I had no idea what the stats meant lol (I had no manual since I bought the game used and it was still $40ish) I have a ton of RPGs I still have not finished/started, so it's not like I am hurting for JRPG's in the meantime... life kinda does that to you, you don't nearly the time to play. I remember during PSX era when I was a child, JRPG's was almost always what I played and I put way too much time into my days. Then again, when it's 100 outside in Houston all summer, it's not like you really wanna go outside too much...

I'd say Souls are more of a Japanese take on WRPGs...

Unfortunately this genre of gaming is becoming increasingly niche on console. Western audiences are increasingly moving away from the genre. As they become more sophisticated, edgier, and more mature. While Japanese audiences seem to still be attracted to lighthearted fare in their games. Story telling used to be this genres saving grace, but it has become increasingly apparent. That the better story telling is actually to be found in other genres now. That is a really big problem for Japanese Role Playing games.

Outside of story telling the rest of the mechanics involved in the genre are pretty weak by the standards of today. Turn based combat, arena based combat, and instanced encounters. Simply aren't as thrilling as the more dynamic combat that can be found in their Western counterparts. Along with the associated greater freedom that players have to customize their characters, and exploit the worlds those characters inhabit.

The genre may not be doomed, but it seems to be relegated to niche. Unless the Japanese audience for the games suddenly starts to align itself more favorably with Western audiences. Who are obviously craving something more then PG rated fare. If the story is what has to carry the genre. Then the stories need to be really good. They cannot expressly come out of Saturday morning cartoons. They need to have more elements more mature gamers might find appealing.

Anyway I just don't really see that happening. The divide in tastes seems to be too great. I just find it kind of ironic that a game like Halo is beating Final Fantasy in the story department hands down. Japanese developers really need to up their game seriously in the writing department.

this must be a joke, i see nothing sophisticated on adult male 17 - 35 years old who spend countless hours every week playing CoD, GTA or Uncharted and other so called M rated games, i think console gaming transformed from children and teenager pastime to hartz 4 entertainment, nothing more or less.

I call this Hollywoodization of gaming, it's of course not only problem in gaming it's problem of entire western civilization

Yes they will be back when Sony is back on top with the PS4.
But they won't be anymore the Nr1 Genre like they were before this Gen...War and pew pew had far to much influence at new gamers.
They will stay with their Army Shooters and will always support them. And those games are working to good for Publishers to let them die.Multiplayer Shooters are easy to make and make so much money without putting a lot of effort in them.

but the thing that some people -stubornly- still refuse to accept is that FF XIII was never actually build as a straightforward rpg

Oh come on. What about it is anything like a Western RPG? FF XIII is far more Japanese style than FF XII.
