Forums - Gaming - Are console JRPGs a dying breed, or will they make a comeback next gen?

No seriously, is Monolith the only 1st-party JRPG dev?

I can't think of any others.

JRPGs are already dead. WRPGs run the show on consoles now.

Intelligent Systems are the other. They make Fire Emblem and are 1st Party with Nintendo since their conception back in the 80's.

I...I guess FE can be considered JRPG.

Ok so Intellegent and Monolith.

The days of Vagrant Story, Xenogears Breath of Fire and FFIV - VI, are gone. That being said, who can predict the changing times in the videogaming universe. I foresee a cinergy of likeminded fans from across the ocean, coming together to demand new and exciting adventures in bullet hell ridden Cave and Treasure games. I see demand and outrage at no new Gradius Announcement. I see us, telling videogame publishers: whe demand AAA shumps. And we will prevail. Same could be said for jRPG's: Don't let the masses engulf your might and silence your fervor. Your justly will shall not be denied.W will endure: JRPG fans Unite!

only 2 ways it can come back
1) Japan buys home consoles again
2) The West starts caring for Japanese games again

Intelligent Systems also makes the Paper Mario games.

And Nintendo also owns AlphaDream (Mario & Luigi), 1-Up (Mother 3), and Creatures, Inc (Earthbound, Pokémon Ranger). Not to mention the Pokémon Company! Nintendo also has a very close partnership with Camelot (Golden Sun), though it's unclear to me whether or not they actually own Camelot.

You know, I love dem JRPGs. Like, A LOT! But this gen has been less than stellar for the CONSOLE JRPG enthusiast compared to previous gens. Most Japanese devs seem to have moved their resources in developing JRPGs for handhelds, which is cool because we had some epic JRPGs on the DS and PSP, which also seems to be carrying over to the 3DS and hopefully also for the Vita.

That being said, I want to play those amazing fully fleshed JRPG experiences on the consoles which make you go WOW. Although the 360 got its fair share of JRPGs at the beginning of the gen, the quality and quantity just dropped halfway though the current gen. This was the case until very recently where the PS3 has been picking up in this category, showing us a glimmer of hope on what could be the future of JRPGs going forward, i.e. Ni No Kuni, Tales of Xilia, etc. So my hope is that at least the PS4 will continue on with what the PS3 has started in terms of bringing back those classic but fresh JRPG experiences. Maybe the Wii U might even get a fully fledged console Pokemon RPG (doubt it but one can hope right?).

So what do you guys think? Are console JRPGs going the way of the Dodo, or will they make an epic comeback?

You mean extremely linear stat building games where you command a party and there is tons of dialog, and a strongly forced storyline and cut scenes?  Look for the future to be far more open world, which can have elements of JRPGs from the past, and very possibly some anime style, but the future is in built worlds, not linear stuff.  At least that is how I see it.
