I really love them, I hope they will come back, but even if they do, the storylines have changed some in tone to fit more of what's popular thesedays... more and more RPGs take a serious tone. For me, I don't play games to read novels or to engage in serious thinking... for me, gaming is very much a relaxation sorta activity. I do it in-between things and I like the occasional RPG where the art is inspiring and beautiful and I have the power of suspense of disbelief, so being taken into an imaginary world is really nice... it doesn't have to be super serious all the time and I just like the scenery and the gameplay to take me into another world, not worry so much about the obvious non-sensical stuff.
My husband loves the Disgaea series, but it's all humor and it's confined to mini battlefields, so not enough depth for me... even though yeah, the system itself--I see it has a TON of depth... but as much as I like gameplay, I need a rich scenery and something to escape into. It's hard to do that with a strategy game... though I loved Final Fantasy Tactics... it's a little weird to compare the two though.

That's what I like about JRPGs too. What I've never liked are random battles and heavy state/turn based battle systems. That's why I like games like Xenoblade. It has all the qwurkiness that Japanese games are known for as well as an imaginative world with interesting, although cliche, characters but the battle system is active.

I used to hate them too, but I'm over it now. I was 11-12 when I first played my first serious RPG which was Wild Arms. I used to escape the battles because I had no idea what the stats meant lol (I had no manual since I bought the game used and it was still $40ish) I have a ton of RPGs I still have not finished/started, so it's not like I am hurting for JRPG's in the meantime... life kinda does that to you, you don't nearly the time to play. I remember during PSX era when I was a child, JRPG's was almost always what I played and I put way too much time into my days. Then again, when it's 100 outside in Houston all summer, it's not like you really wanna go outside too much...
