yuou will be surprised, online gaming has changed the face of gaming this gen, for 360/ps3, gamers are way more hardcore and know what new games are releasing more then ever, both consoles have have sold a whopping 150 million units, people are dying to upgrade, i just hope both of them have enough consoles, caus ehtey are gonna sell like hot cakes, remember the 360/ps3 age group is a male 16-33, that age group has money and jobs.

wouldn't align with the hard numbers we got from MS though. ps3 is 270+ (all depends on how much under 100k wii got)

Could be NPD adjustments also (for example that NPD Dec undertracking is adjusted into early 2013 reports). Their data is not always trustworthy on a monthly basis. ioi confirmed this too in the past. NPD never adjusts already released numbers, they always bake in their adjustments into future reports.

Just ask yourself, in a slow time of the year just before a next gen is about to launch how can all of a sudden all consoles have been able to keep steady sales compared to last year? I think we need to take these numbers with a grain of salt.
