Forums - Gaming - Who else is at a crossroads with their gaming? I am facing changing tastes, and concerns the videogames industry is not competent enough....

Here is a reality for me.

I am looking at the videogames industry, seeing the likes of Gear Box going botch job with Aliens title, but also they failed to competently implement the Badass point system in Borderlands 2,  It is  cool feature, but I see that they did a restart, wiped my points and ended up giving me tokens back, plus some keys to unlock chests in order to get improved weapons as a gift for the effort (I had Borderlands 1 die in interest to me, after someone online gifted me with this hacked shield that made me indestructable).  Pretty much, make it too easy, and I am going toget bored.  And yes, I don't mind easy, but too easy?

Anyhow, I am looking at the news here, besides the studios closing down.  And I am seeing issues with competence.  Unless a title is an update, I see issues with major patches being needed.  You see game breaking stuff happening in it.  Simcity is a disaster.  Tomb Raiders has issues.  And it goes on and on.  There was also the issues with Diablo 3.  I am seeing noted franchises running into these issues.  A test is, can you really trust preorder?

This is even before get to the fun angle aspect of a game, and novelty and whatnot.  Let's say that there is the impossible task of really bug free code happens, and you can buy an unpatched game.  What about fun and new experiences?  Can there really be a new IP released that works well enough, and meets sufficient demands of gamers today, and not be loaded with bugs?  And can these happen sufficiently?  I see what Nintendo comes out with, which is pretty good, but then you pile on all the OTHER demands of gamers these days, as seen in these forums, and they want top-notch voice acting, realistic physics, a storyline that doesn't suck with a good ending.  They would also prefer everything out of the box to be sufficiently large,  On that note, I think Rage was pretty competently done, but failed on the points of being fun for people.  In short, it wasn't really that much fun.  It was ok, but fun?  Oh, maybe file that under "too short".

So, then I see the likes of the PS4, and Microsoft's offering and the Wii U.  Seeing all this (and other reasons on my end I will go on below), I have to wonder while I am willing to give the nod to the PS4 as being maybe the best console, once all are said and done, I may not even end up getting one.  I am fatigued here.  I am hardly playing anything now, except for firing up Minecraft sometime.  Just not booting up my 360 really to play anything.  I still have not gotten a 3DS or Vita, which I would of in the past by now.  Spending hundreds of dollars is not in the works, to be able get stuff I may not play.  And it isn't the hardware either here.  I think things are fine.  Heck, I think technically everything I have now is fine.  It is just, I don't know, maybe I am changing, and at  crossroads.

My free time is now this: I am trying to do tabletop gaming as a viable career.  I would be willing to work in a portable format, such as Android or iOS.  My eye is more on these spaces (I do Apple tech support now as a job, so a benefit would be getting SOME iOS product).  I also have a few days off, and try to get together to do tabletop gaming, with either my games or community building.  For me, Android and iOS look to be far more viable space, if I can scrape together some cash.  I also do some retro videogaming stuff to, connected with my CADERS group.  And it seems, if you stay away from something for awhile, it causes there to be a decline in interest.  Heck, it is a chore for me to end up going out to see even a movie.  With either movies or videogames, I still can get on Youtube and see the ending, if I am really up for wanting to get anything.

So, I see a crossroads with myself.  Is it just me, or others here also?  Is it just myself, or mainly the videogames industry, or a mix of both?  What gives here?  Am I alone?  If not, who else is here?

And yes, would be willing to tip the nod to the PS4 as a console of choice, if my interest remains in it, and it shows to be worth its while.  I have no idea what Microsoft will do, and the Wii U is suprisingly not as appealing with the second screen.  I really thought it would be cool, but my console gaming is a solitaire affair now with a single smaller flatscreen as the display,

with my backlog of gaming I'm stuck at a red light....

just to be clear: what's tabletop gaming?

Ok, from what i see your main problem is letting the internet influence you.

Ignore what you read in the internet. The internet blows everything out of proportion, making big deals of something almost irrelevant.
Bugs on games have always happened since the days of old. The only difference here is that once someone finds one nowadays they put it on the internet and its instantly all over the web. This can be replicated to reviews/articles that change your pre-desposition towards a game.

Try this: Dont read about games in the internet anymore. I know its difficult, but without these pre-emptive views there to influence you, you will see things with a fresh perspective and realise that the internet, while a great tool is getting out of hand.

i'm stuck in the first 4 yr's of the 8th gen. that's how far i'm backed up.

As games become more complex, bugs increase and play-testing becomes less effective. It's as simple as that. If you can't take that, and some people can't, then stick to older/simpler games.

Personally, I'm willing to deal with bugs as long as games are good. I crave complexity. Very simplistic games bore me quickly. Past generations were way too dependent on simple mechanics and I even started to drift away from gaming with the SNES. Fallout3 and New Vegas are two of my favorite games ever, despite all the bugs. The same with Dragon Age: Origins.

Some of the games you listed, like Borderlands 2, I'll take over most older games in a heartbeat. I'm looking forward to doing another NG+ at some point. Rage, while not amazing, was fun.

Just different tastes, I guess. I've been gaming since the Atari 2600 and I'm pretty pleased with the current gen. I don't play games as much as I used to, and I'm a lot more picky now, in that I'll get rid of a game that doesn't appeal to me quickly, where I used to finish every game I came across as a kid, but I do enjoy the genres I like very much.

Games you play on a tabletop, like board and card games.

So drop $60 on something without any indication of whether it is good or not?  I still would look to metacritic at least.  Of course, there is the rental side of things, if that still remains around.

Every game has bugs even great games like Red Dead(lowrider chuck wagon).
