EGM: "The graphics and sound are both top notch, and the gameplay itself may well be the best we’ve seen from the series."

Wth??

It's the whole prequel thing. The story is nothing we really asked for. The reveal was basically "OMG GoWIV .. GoWIV!! ..Ascension? What?"

It cant be compared to if a GoWIV was announced and set the epitome of excitement to follow.

This by going in has you going: "Okay lets see" and by exiting: "Cool I guess".

It simply doesnt have that drive that the mainline entries do.

For instance:
I honestly thought Zeus would kill Kratos in GoW3, during the section where the ghost Zeus strangles you and all your bars fade away: I thought Kratos died and went to some odd Hell haha.

But really: Just look at the hype. It has nothing to do with how good SSM is.

The focus was put on the MP and the story just isn't as exciting. (Don't get me wrong I am hyped for it, but it doesnt generate for me atleast, close to the hype of GoWIII in terms of where they are taking the story. They even revealed the game with the MP in focus for like a year).

I am not saying they made a sloppy SP (I havent played it yet) its just THE SP they made was and is probably more gameplay of something we already have just refined somewhat. But people seem to say that it doesnt have as many "epic" moments as previous GoW games which I suspect can make the gameplay tedious. We've killed beasts in 5 games now, and if this is a game where 8 hours is spent on more beasts .. well.. I can kinda see the issue. Especially since with a hack and slash -> The gameplay truly is king. I am not saying GoWs gameplay is bad, its actually very good. But too much of anything and it starts to get stale.

You'd think that with the MP however, it would still gain a higher score (mid 80s). But at the same time: The reviewers are rarely impressed this late on what is the longest generation ever. We have barely seen one >90 game in a while and that's including A LOT and A LOT of games. (Out of the top of my head: Dishonored, Borderlands, Far Cry 3, Tomb Raider, Rising, Crysis 3, DMC, XCOM, Halo 4 and theres more).

I can not believe Ascension is being rated lower than DMC and Revengeance.  it is really insulting to the franchise.  hoprfully word of mouth will keep this game selling.

But Rising and DMC only had focus on the SP.

Ascension did not. The SP unlike the above, was NOT the focus.

Especially when the story if you go back 2 years ago wasn't even expected because its.. unneeded (sort of, you get what I mean).

Stig and the Level Designer for GoW1-2-3 for example are working on a new IP. I know that doesn't say much: But that also has got me thinking. Maybe that's also taking a lot of man power. Who knows what other people are onboard for that.

With GoW3 you just KNEW that this shit has some tremendous effort behind it. With GoWA the MP feels like an experiment and the SP is there to cater to us die hard fans and not so much the guys who don't really want to go deeper into Kratos (lets face it, not everyone loves the guy). And those who gave it a shot felt that they fell short. We cant possibly know until we play it.

They have "focused" in SP and their SP is quite crappy and short. If that is focus, I dont want to see what they would do if they dont focus on sp.

Regarding GOW: Ascension, with all I have seen, I can say that SP was as much focus as it was with GOW3 if not more, it is just they also put a lot of focus in mp.     The narrative is very Uncharted like which better than in GOW games; and they have the fantastic brutality and gameplay of GOW.  Also you can clearly see in those behind the scenes videos all the effort they put in making the story, the cutscenes, the gameplay; and it is way more sophisticated than in previous GOW games.

Also, the story of this game IS needed, because I bet that it will setup the upcoming events of GOW4.

In the end, before saying the studio fucked it up or not, we have to play the game, so dont be so enthusiastic in throwing them crap.  They have always make stellar games, and I dont expect any different from this game.

Outside of the trophy complaint, I actually thought the Sessler review was very well done. Much like all of his other reviews. That man doesn't just roll a die for his scores. He always explains his points clearly.

With that said guys; no one should be cancelling pre-orders for this game. All of the reviewers have apparently enjoyed it. Yes, you can like a game and give it a 7/10.

My only flaw with Sessler's review (I didn't watch it to the end I had to go do something) was that he said you had to strategize to defeat standard enemies, which he marked as a negative...

NVM, EGM gave Aliens 9/10 lol.

hahahahaha! Exactly why I don't bother with scores. Simply ridiculous.

Anyway, generally speaking I'm really curious about the direction SSM will take Kratos in the future. Clearly they don't intend to put him down since 'they see a lot of life in the character still'. With that said I've been wondering if they'll continue after 3 or just reboot the series.

Gameplay wise I must say I LOVE the changes SSM made. From the little I played from the demo and from what I saw in videos I thought those were great chances. Plus, since it is a prequel some constraints were placed on Kratos with respect to his powers, so I imagine in later games he'll be much more versatile. I find most reviews didn't consider this. Because it was a younger Kratos SSM had to scale back something to fit with the context, and yet they kept comparing it to GOW3 and bashing it for not being as 'epic'. What were they expecting? lol

I can understand why there's little enthusiasm for this game. With prequels they are sort of predictable and there's little room to maneuver. That's why the majority of my Xbox friends are not bothering with the new Gears game. I think that's silly, but to each his own.

"The reviews are not as high as I hoped, but I'm EXTREMELY proud of what we accomplished. If you read the reviews they say it plays like a God of War game...good that is what we were aiming for ;). The way I look at it, it comes down to the fans, if they like it then we did our job. Look COD, got 83 on metacritic but sold 20+ million, or Psychonauts critics loved it but the average gamer not so much.

Each area of the game has its own challenges. Certain SP levels are very complecated to create/design (Example - Hecaton. The opening level). Getting in and reworking Kratos/combat was a big challenge. The way we work everything really comes together late in the project. With MP, building the tech and design"formula" of how the game works/plays took ALONG time. We put people on it that were able to power through those challenges. I understand that some people look at the MP and discount it, but I believe there is a ton of great content there. Most importantly it feels like GOW, and plays different than everything out there ;)"

oh and it's confirmed, ALL FUTURE DLC MAPS WILL BE FREE!

Ah, I see. Well I wasn't expecting single player DLC, but I thought MP related stuff would be connected to it - maps came to mind first. If its weapons and stuff that would be fine too. Either way, that Kratos statue is more than worth the extra $$. :D

This was enough for me to warrant a purchase.

-Hardest GOW to date. Not for the casual fan of GOW.
-Less button mash more parries and smart gameplay.

This is all I needed to know.

First day buy.
