Forums - Nintendo - Is this the year of the 3DS? - Nothing will stop it from being this years sales King!

This year so far

3DS 1,587,972 (-89%) 29,157,158
PS3 1,293,084 (-89%) 73,078,018

3DS will probably sell more in the end, but to say it will be "king" is going to far. PS3 won't be far behind.

PS3 will destroy all home consoles (even the X360). But 3DS hasn't even gotten the killer app yet! PS4 will make PS3 sales go down some during holiday. I say 3DS will win by alot but PS3 should definitely come in 2nd beating everything else easy

It is always about the games price slash guy.

I want to know why the handhelds for all the units sold tend to sell way less software then their console brethren per unit , is it piracy or the demographic where you can have more than one handheld in the same house sharing the same games ?

Piracy has traditionally been a big part of it.  It's hurt both brands badly.  However, with the new genration of handhelds, I think it's important to remember that they probably do a greater percentage of business digitally than the home consoles.  I know the Vita does, that's already been confirmed.

Piracy is not an issue with the 3DS, no one has hacked it.

Recently, they have gotten as far as the Friends List, but then it gets bricked on Firmware 1.0.0-0U.

I didn't say it was.  I said traditionally, which refers to previous handhelds.

All the link told me is that the Vita digital sales for Ubisoft are around 15-20% ,  this seems good but they don't mention what volumes they working off and what % they are getting off  PS3 digital.

The 20% figure seems to crop up a lot whenever digital sales in general are mentioned , so the Vita may well be selling around the industry average still when company's themselves give figures of between 15-20%  without volumes to let us know how big ore small that 5% discrepancy maybe the Vita is well above the consoles in Digital  sales we may never know .

It'll handily beat the Vita again this year, even if they do cut the price globally.

The Vita's proprietary memory will still be priced stupidly, and it doesn't have nearly as much solid software down the road. Most of the games I want for mine aren't coming out until the summer at the earliest. And there aren't that many.

There are various advantages for home consoles:

1) The gamers with the most spending power either own home consoles over handhelds or they own both.
2) The industry dramatically favors home consoles over handhelds when it comes to game development. A significantly higher number of appealing games (that are also more heavily marketed) naturally leads to more game sales on home consoles, regardless of the spending power of any given consumer.
3) Since most people's gaming time tends to be at home, even gamers who own both, home consoles and handhelds, will buy more home console games as that is what they will spend most of their time on.

It makes sense when you look at it that way.

Well, I just bought one, and I was a huge 3DS skeptic, if not downright hater for quite awhile, so that's a good sign I guess! :P

The lure of Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart, Zelda, Tales, Paper Mario, Monster Hunter, Pokemon, etc. was just too much to overcome.

Even with 3 huge Mario games, it failed to grab the western market. If Mario can't make it happen nothing will.

The 3DS didn't grab the western market? I know soo many people with a 3ds though.....

The 3DS has already sold 9 million in the US. And is close to selling 10 million in Japan.

But this yeah has only began and the global sales since launch are already 30 million.
