Not that Microsoft didn't try, they promoted it like crazy, arrenged for exclusive titles like Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey and even gave it a massive price cut. But still it didn't really pick up and retailers abandoned the system some time ago. This for me raises the question, is Microsoft even go to try again in Japan at all? I can see Microsoft still realising it's new system there even if it will cost them money, but will the retailers want it? |
I don't think it would cost MS a lot of money to release their next console in Japan. As far as shipping goes the only place that would cost less money to get it there is a majority of mainland China.
I'm sure they'll send consoles there but I doubt they will try very hard to establish a market.

The 360 released in New Zealand, which is in a remote section of the world and has a human population of about twice that of the xbox360 population in Japan. Shipping the consoles to Japan will not be an issue. The 360 was released in the UAE, which has a human population about 5 times that of the 360 population of Japan. If 20% of UAE own 360s (1 for every family of 5), it would only have sold as many as Japan, so shipping to non English speaking countries for 1.5 million consoles is fine. 360 sales in Japan are not actually low, it's just that other console sales in Japan are ridiculously high. |
1.6 million in 7 years? you must be joking.

Well obviously there will be some exclusive support. Xbox is very popular with the SHMUP crowd for example.
I just really dont see the "big" devs or games going to Xbox again. Look at what the 360 got.
Tales of Vesperia
Star Ocean 4
The Last Remnant
Lost Odyssey
Blue Dragon.
Ace Combat 6
Infinite Undiscovery
Eternal Sonata
Monster Hunter(!)
Dead or Alive 4
Final Fantasy XIII International Edition
Those are off the top of my head. That support for a console that wont sell 2 Million in Japan is astonishing. I just cant see 3rd parties going with them again on fairly big projects while ignoring the competing platforms.

1.26% of the World's population
2.1% of the World's Xbox360s.
Read carefully, I'm not going to be able to explain it more simply.
360 sales in Japan are not actually low (for a country of Japan's population), it's just that other console sales in Japan are ridiculously high. Consequently, MS has no more reason to pull out of Japan than any of the big 3 have to pull out of Eastern Europe, Russia, Middle East, New Zealand, Australia, any of Asia.
It's quite simple
360 has sold more in Japan than PS3 has in Russia
PS4 will launch in Russia
Therefore, 720 will launch in Japan.
Yes. They will ship to every country that it can.
I'm sure they'll release it but they won't try as hard as they did with the 360.
Sigs are dumb. And so are you!
| axumblade said: The 360 was great for market penetration. Sold almost 7 times as many systems as the original Xbox in Japan. The 360's biggest issue was that Microsoft promised exclusive JRPG's and most of those "exclusives" were timed so it pissed a lot of people off when the PS3 announcements came along a year later. |
With more content, 1080p, and better sound. It's not that they were timed, it's that they were worse in every aspect on the 360.
i've said this before in a similar thread.
the 360's problem was not the inflexible japanese market or the timed exclusives. MS just couldn't market themselves out of RROD in japan.
simple as that
