Well since you mentioned Batman, it is up to you really. It is a matter of taste. Note however that MGS HD costs around 29 USD while Batman is under 20. So if you chose to buy MGS and Batman AA later you'll save more.

Yea I'm leaning towards MGS HD at the moment. I know the story and gameplay is great in the MGS games but some people have noted that the controls are pretty clunky. Have you played the HD collection an if so did you have any trouble with the controls?

edit: I also played the demo for MGS: Reveangence. It was a lot of fun but I know it's not at all similar to any of the other MGS games.


Dude I'm a Metal Gear freak. I own every title. I have no issues with the controls, but I guess 'clunky' is subjective; however, as I pointed out I never found them as such. For 10 USD I say give them a try. You can't go wrong there. I have both Batman games as well and they're great too. But if I were you I'd get MGS and get Batman AA later if you're still interested since it hovers around 15 USD or so. I've been monitoring the price of MGS HD and it rarely dips below 28. Hope this helps.

that's my favorite gameplay in the whole series >_>. It's got an arcadey stealth feel like 1, instead of a splinter cell/General 3rd Person shooter like feel of 3-->

but I knowI'm in the minority heh.

Thanks for the tip, does it make a big difference in how the game is played?

It feels more like a current gen game with the more "normal" camera, so it'll probably be easier to get into it for newcomers.

It's not in the collection for some reason but you can pick it up on PS3 if you have a PS3.  Also MGS4 is a must have.  My favorite in the series actually.    Peace Walker is a sequel to MGS3.  The series jumps all over the place the time fram is like this.

Yup, it's pretty complicated. You'll be fine as long as you stick to MGS1-4 though, and perhaps read a bit about the other games.

That's why I recommend starting with MGS3:

-It's a pretty new game that doesn't feel outdated.

-It starts the whole story and is therefore easy to follow. Definitely the easiest for newcomers, considering how complex the story is.

-It's considered by many (me included) the best in the series.

The only problem I see is that the other games may not live up to MGS3's standards if you start with it. But at least if you dislike it you'll know it won't get much better from there.

Play Metal gear solid 1 first, it's vital to the series and one of the best ones. I'm sure you can find a way via emulator.

The collection includes 2, 3 ,Peace Walker and the 2 original Metal Gear games from the MSX2.

After playing all of them (You should be OK skipping the 80's games) then you'll need to borrow someones PS3 to play MGS4 which is sort of like the conclusion of the series.

I was in the same boat as you a few months ago, never played a Metal Gear Solid game in my life. That was until I decided to pick up MGS 4 and see what the deal was with the series. After playing around 1-2 hours of MGS 4 I realized I couldn't play anymore, I needed to pick up the HD collection to really enjoy and understand everything, and nothing felt more satisfying then playing 2, 3, Peace Walker just for the epic conclusion in MGS 4.

Gameplay wise I thought it was great and graphically the games look good in glorious HD.
If you do plan on getting into the series go into it with the intent to play 1 and 4 somehow, I can't speak for MGS 1 yet but MGS 4 was amazing.

In my personal experience, I've played and enjoyed the series a lot without ever finishing the first one. I started at MGS2, and only because I ran out of games to play when I was overseas. Seriously it was in my collection for years and I never had access or the money to buy new games so I had to play what I had in my desert tent.

I think it was 2003 when I first jumped into the series and I've been a fan since.

tl;dr the HD collection would be a great start even if you didn't play the first one.
