Forums - Gaming - Problems the WiiU faces against PS4/NeXbox

I really don´t think that the achievement / trophy system is something really important. To be frank, it causes a certain division between gamers who play on-line, some kind of segregation, because some people only accept to play with people that have similar achievements.... while that seems great for competitive players, it doesn´t seem the case with Nintendo games, who have a more friendly and casual approach.

As for the other two topics, you got valid points. They really need to work on their update speed. I remember that was annoying on the PS3 and Xbox360 some time ago and they should take a look of what its competitors did wrong in this area and not repeat their mistakes.
The same can be said about online play. Nintendoland is a lot of fun but they really should have put online play on that. The same can be said to NSMBU. On the 3DS online play works just fine for a lot of games, so they know what to do.

Still, it seems that with all the competition the WiiU may find its own audience in the market. It´s just unrealistic to think that it will be a success as Wii was, specially now that the industry is decreasing year after year

I would hardly call one glib comment "ranting".  I just thought it interesting how Xbox repeatedly "changed gaming forever", and how you listed things for it like downloadable content and video streaming when they're also on other consoles.  It was kind of amusing and made it sound as though Sony and Nintendo had done very little to alter the course of the industry.  Calm yourself.

And no, that's not where online console gaming started, though I definitely give Microsoft credit for bringing competitive multiplayer to consoles.

If Im correct, Dreamcast had live?  Could be wrong on that.  PC is what started online but it wasnt mainstream.  The first successful online service for consoles was xbox mainly because of Halo.

And no you are just reading too much into what I was saying.  Do you honestly think that XBL/Achievements didnt change gaming?  I thought it was implied that PSN has been similar to XBL?  Just for you I will add an extra sentence though.

Yes, the Dreamcast was where it started, especially with Phantasy Star Online and Quake, not to mention having a web browser and other online functions, such as watching video.  The Xbox gave it a push, but Sega started it.  The PS2 probably did the most to make it popular.

As someone who doesn't care about achievements/trophies at all, though, I would say that they haven't changed gaming, only added to it.  Millions of people wouldn't notice if achievements/trophies went away tomorrow.  However, I do agree that they add something for many others, and Nintendo is making their games less attractive to those people by not having their own version.

Ill agree with most of that.  I dont know about online on PS2 doing the most though.  I guess that is more of opinion though. I think Halo pushed it the most and now Call of duty.  Socom was pretty big on Ps2 though and helped as well.

I had a dreamcast but i never played online unfortunately.  I always fealt like it was ahead of its time though and i really whish it would have been a success.

And yeah Achievements/Trophies are only an addition and while many people dont care about them, many people do care about them at the same time.  It shouldnt be that dificult for Nintendo to add an achievement system.

yes well surely online multiplayer/co-op is a given these days whether you like it or not, personally I prefer the co-op side of things,
but Nintendo are in a good position regarding selling their brand for cheaper than the competition, money is tight they say, obviously Microsoft and sony are going to head towards subscription based customers,it's just the nature of the beast these days and how you pay for almost everything you use media/tech wise, its the only way I can see sony surviving anyway,i don't know what Nintendo will need to do in the future but I could see subs to a Nintendo network as an option for some customers

edit-i like the gamerdacrds/tags because they show a pic of the game you are playing which can be pretty as artwork is awesome but sure each to their own,

You should rename the thread. Should be "My Problems With Nintendo" your OP doesn't have much to do with PS4 or Durango.

OT: 3DS is an amazing system and I personally don't find it to be outdated at all. The graphics are great for a HH system and the 3D still wows me to be honest. The games are still lacking a bit 2 years later though but 2013 looks to be changing that for sure!

Not exactly.  I love my 3DS and dont really have any complaints about it.  Very excited about Pokemon X/Y.

Alright, I wasn't sure if you were happy with both systems. Ignore the 3DS part!

I agree with you about Wii U, its outdated but in the end its about great games which I'm sure Nintendo will provide. To be honest, I think Nintendo is making good use with their headstart. They don't have any next-gen competition yet and by the time PS4 and Durango launch they will have:

Nintendo Land, New Super Mario Bros U, Zombi U, Lego City, Game & Wario, Wii Fit U, The Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, Wii Party U, and Zelda. In a way, these are the Wii U launch games because Wii U will already have them before the others launch. Nintendo will likely also have 3D Mario, Mario Kart, Pokemon NFC, and Retro's game ready for this Holiday or Early 2014. The games are coming, just taking longer than expected.

My main issue is that they dont have a stead flow of games.  They cant rely on 3rd parties like the other two because 3rd parties are usually better on the other 2.  So they have to rely on exclusives and 1st party and just like the 3DS launch it is taking them too long to bring out games.  Itll get better over time im sure though :)

All I get from the OP is that Nintendo and Sony are lucky to live in a world where the Xbox brand has done so much for gaming. Wah.

As for the rest, Sony and Microsoft have a business model where they change and adapt to new trends and different tastes. Nintendo's model has always been one where they make the device the way they want it to be, which customers can either take or leave. They're very, very slow to go after new core customers or those who are looking for more variety. Intentional or not, that's how they are. They definitely don't appeal to everyone--they seem to be trying to change that with the Wii U, but only kind of. They're niche somewhat by design.

They make devices they think people want, and they failed a bunch of times like N64 and GC.  Wii they hit out of the ball park but WiiU seems to be another fail on their part unless they turn it around.  Appealing to every one is exactly what they are about, all ages access to all.

Lets not pretand their failure is due to some nobility of doing their own thing and willingly paying for it.

I agree, their flow of games could be much improved. At the same time as I said, I don't think it will matter too much in the end because PS4 & Durango aren't released yet. You have a valid reason to be unhappy with how Nintendo's treated Wii U so far because you are an early buyer. I honestly regretted buying a 3DS a week after launch because it had so few games. At E3 they showed off many games that I really wanted, but it took them forever to release them. My most anticipated game was ACNL and that still isn't out yet. I bought the 3DS early, on the promise of amazing games. I even contemplated selling the 3DS but decided not to and just waited it out. It was an extremely long wait but 2013 looks to be amazing for the 3DS for me personally. It will likely become my favorite HH system ever and I'm considering upgrading to the XL.

In short, I think you just need to wait it out and you will eventually be pleased with the Wii U. It has its issues like every system but in the end I think you will be happy with it. Even though I don't have a Wii U, I hope the wait isn't nearly as long for you guys!

You left out the Wii U's biggest problem: lack of 3rd Party Support. I feel confident when I say that's biggest reason people may not buy the Wii U. The cause of this lack of support is under debate even today. Some people say its because Nintendo consoles typically lack the power to run 3rd party games. Some say its because only Nintendo games sell on Nintendo consoles; or at least the type of games 3rd parties usually make wouldn't sell. And still many others genuinely believe 3rd parties have a deep emotional hatred of Nintendo and just wants to see them fail, even if it means consciously losing money.

Mind you I didn't read the first 3 paragraphs as they seem unnecessarily long for what was essentially an introduction on common knowledge, and aren't necessary for your points.

1.  They are not putting Online Multiplayer for many of there games and instead say they want you to play in the same room.  That is cool and all but not everybody constantly has the ability to play with someone in there homes.  This is irritating and in my opinion not only lazy, but old fashioned.  We are in 2013, not 1991.

2.  The lack of achievements.  Achievements is not a game breaker but it does add replayability and a competive aspect with some gamers.  It is annoying that they refuse to start adding this in. It should be mandatory by now.  This is a 1up for Sony/MSFT.  Mario just lost 1 life.

3.  Updates are horribly slow and it will also lack in multimedia features.  The WiiU is in the 8th generation of consoles but at the same time, when the PS4/NeXbox comes out this thing is going to look so outdated yet it isnt even a year old yet.

I agree, Nintendo can still make a good run this gen, but they got to fix a lot of things, and trophies are very importante to me, and to a lot of people, they are just a lot of fun to get in my opinion, of course I respect anyone who thinks diferent.

I love PSN PLUS, and the free online at the ps3, that was the reason I stopped gaming online in my Xbox360, althought I have 40 games for it. If the PS4 have something similar, it would be great.

Althought, I don´t think sony will win this gen, they had the coolest system last gen and came last, so I just hope they don´t die in this one.

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

I think all three will do just fine.  I dont expect Nintendo to do Wii like numbers but I think it will still do fine.
