Yes, the Dreamcast was where it started, especially with Phantasy Star Online and Quake, not to mention having a web browser and other online functions, such as watching video. The Xbox gave it a push, but Sega started it. The PS2 probably did the most to make it popular. As someone who doesn't care about achievements/trophies at all, though, I would say that they haven't changed gaming, only added to it. Millions of people wouldn't notice if achievements/trophies went away tomorrow. However, I do agree that they add something for many others, and Nintendo is making their games less attractive to those people by not having their own version. |
Ill agree with most of that. I dont know about online on PS2 doing the most though. I guess that is more of opinion though. I think Halo pushed it the most and now Call of duty. Socom was pretty big on Ps2 though and helped as well.
I had a dreamcast but i never played online unfortunately. I always fealt like it was ahead of its time though and i really whish it would have been a success.
And yeah Achievements/Trophies are only an addition and while many people dont care about them, many people do care about them at the same time. It shouldnt be that dificult for Nintendo to add an achievement system.
