Forums - Gaming - Problems the WiiU faces against PS4/NeXbox

First thing I want to say before saying anything else is I do love my nintendo games and that is not my problem with Nintendo.  I own a WiiU and 3DS and I'm definitely glad I own a 3DS.  The WiiU I've barely even touched on the other hand though.  I have ZombiU and New Super Mario Bros WiiU but New Super Mario Bros is just old now.  I just don't get excited about it.  I would probably like it if I got to play co-op more often but you know how Nintendo is, they don't like online which is my main reason I'm writing this.

12 years ago Microsoft entered the market with XBOX and it soon changed gaming forever with a little thing called Xbox Live. This came out in 2002 and was based around a subcscription model for $50 a year.  Since then online activity has exploded and now Xbox Live offers Xbox Live Arcade,  Updates, cross-game chat, Skype Video Chat, Downloadable Content, Movie Streaming,  Movie service, Internet Explorer, youtube, etc It is also heavily rumored that the NeXbox will act as a DVR Cable box as well.  Something else that it offers is Achievement Points which has also changed gaming.

Moving on we had seen Sony adopt an online service in November, 2006 and has made it's own strides since being on the market while recently adding a new subscription model called PS+ which acts as a rental service where you get games free of charge each month and get to keep them as long as you are paying your subscription.  It also has PS Store, streaming movies, internet, Playstation Home, youtube, and soon with PS4 will be adding many more features like live recordings and streaming games to other players.  PSN has also added an achievement point like feature called trophies.

Now moving on to the WiiU they have finally entered the Online market while adding a social aspect called MiiVerse.  I actually expect Microsoft and Sony to do something simiilar with the PS4/NeXbox and that is great.  Now the problem with Nintendo is three things.

1.  They are not putting Online Multiplayer for many of there games and instead say they want you to play in the same room.  That is cool and all but not everybody constantly has the ability to play with someone in there homes.  This is irritating and in my opinion not only lazy, but old fashioned.  We are in 2013, not 1991.

2.  The lack of achievements.  Achievements is not a game breaker but it does add replayability and a competive aspect with some gamers.  It is annoying that they refuse to start adding this in. It should be mandatory by now.  This is a 1up for Sony/MSFT.  Mario just lost 1 life.

3.  Updates are horribly slow and it will also lack in multimedia features.  The WiiU is in the 8th generation of consoles but at the same time, when the PS4/NeXbox comes out this thing is going to look so outdated yet it isnt even a year old yet.

With all that said I do love my Nintendo games and I'm looking forward to Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart, and Zelda but it is a console that is lacking in many categories.  I do want to mention that most Nintendo games doesn't need to be a graphic powerhouse.  3rd parties is what needs more power.  It isn't that Nintendo is bad with multiplatform games.  No, that isn't the case.  It is simply that multiplatform games are better on other consoles.  Because of this they have to rely heavily on there exclusive titles.  While the reptetition of the same games can be annoying I along with millions of others still enjoy them but Nintendo please start acting like a 21st century console and stop treating us like we are 2 years old.  Yes you have a big family environment with your consoles and games but that is no excuse to limit people who are older as well.

And if anybody is wondering why I left out Steam, Origin, and Usoft it is because they are for PC. I was talking about consoles

nintendo doesn't like to use new fancy technology that hardly anyone will use as it doesn't add much value. much like HD, nintendo will start using online features as soon as internet becomes mainstream.

I feel this 100%
I honestly consider Wii U to be 7th gen... unless of course NextBox is terribly unimpressive, in which case we'll just say ps4 is 9th gen ;D
all kidding aside, I've seen dev specs for the 720, so that statement is invalid.
but honestly, nintendo is just not keeping up and it doesn't seem like they care.
people say it's because game quality rules over technical superiority, while valid, nintendo is just shitting out games right now, and they really aren't bringing anything new to the table (still fun, just unexciting and shallow).
No, Nintendo is just niche, and they know they have an army of blind fans and casual gamers that will back them up with any need for REAL innovation.

now I know I'm going to eat my words for saying "innovation" because clearly they revolutionized and standardized motion gaming, and yes that was "innovative," but motion gaming will not stick with the hardcore crowd, and the gaming fad as a whole will not stick with the casual crowd. honestly, (and this goes for all systems) motion gaming, touch screens, 3D, etc. are all super gimmicky and are the least important parts of making a good game! even the most amazing nintendo games we've played in recent history (Pokemon, Fire Emblem, Super Mario 3D Land, Skyward Sword) they weren't great because you could touch them, they were 3D, you could flail your arms, they were fun because they had good stories, mechanics, and what have you. These game would have been JUST AS GOOD without the gimmicks!

Your post could be quite a bit shorter without the apology paragraphs at the start and at the end.

1. It's pretty clear that the Wii U was launched in an unfinished state, so it's not surprising that Nintendo's launch games don't have online play. There will be games with online multiplayer in the future, because the Wii already had them.

2. Since you haven't collected all gold medals in NSMBU, achieving stuff in games can't be all that important to you. The challenge mode in NSMBU also keeps a replay of your best attempt which you can use to show off your skills.

3. A headstart is an advantage for a reason. It allows a company to fix problems before the competition arrives. Nintendo has already promised system updates for spring and summer. As for multimedia, Nintendo has video streaming services on board, plus an apparently good internet browser. What else do people really want from a console?

But most importantly, why did I even write this?

just want to point out as a guy that does love trophies..  trophies/achievements are all about the brag rights hence the importance of a place for them to be on display.

It could be shorter but if it was shorter then it would look like Im just trying to bash the WiiU.  I feel these are all problems heading into the next generation of consoles.  The casual crowd have moved onto phones and the Wii Fit crowd will likely not return either.

A headstart is great if you take advantage of it like the X360 did.  The WiiU is not taking advantage of its headstart at the moment.

And achievemtns has a competive side to comparing with friends.

I guess it depends on one's priorities.

To be honest, I think Xbox Live and achievements have set the industry backwards.

As far as internet connectivity goes, I much prefer local multiplayer, but I certainly see the utility of online multiplayer. As someone who lives thousands of miles away from his friends and family, I definitely appreciate online functionality.

And, finally, multimedia applications are a nice bonus, but we're talking about a video game console here. In that context, multimedia apps are the definition of superfluous.
