Forums - Sony - How Playstation has forced its competition to change or die

That article is definitely biased, the PS3 is still losing to Microsoft and Nintendo in worldwide sales. There aren't official numbers for units sold yet. Don't understand why people are touting Sony's 77 million consoles shipped number, that's SHIPPED not sold! Microsoft still has a huge lead in software sales, and whoever leads in software is winning in hardware. Sony didn't force anybody to do anything, but they did influence Nintendo and Microsoft in some ways. Just like Nintendo and Microsoft influenced Sony, it's called competition. These kind of articles aggravate me because people act like Sony can do no wrong. The PS3 almost bankrupted Sony and the PS4 unveiling just seemed like a desperate attempt for Sony to try to stay relevant, people have moved on... Sony is not as strong a brand that it once was, and people need to get real.

I liked the article and it makes some good points, the Playstation brand is still powerful. However, it seems to almost disregard the impact that Microsoft had on Sony as well.

Microsoft challenged Sony and hit Sony pretty hard. Sony was really cocky and expected to dominate this gen as well, Microsoft brought them off the high horse. Sony knows it can't just release a console and expect to win. What we know so far about the PS4 shows Sony won't have the same level of arrogance, nor mistakes it launched with the PS3. It'll be interesting to see what both Sony and Microsoft do this gen.

Like others have said, competition is good, as it drives the companies to make better quality products. The Playstation brand is strong and Sony won the last two gens by a wide margin, both in sales and in quality games. I love Playstation but there were a lot of mistakes made with the PS3 and this gen. Things change and Sony will have to work if it wants to win again.

As a fan, that makes me all the more excited to see what will happen.

How was the ps4 reveal desperate?  It's called introducing your next console and they wanted to not let ms have a head start this time.  They showed games and detailed specs just like at e3 2005 only with more games.

I'd say that manufacturer success/failure depends more on what they do moreso than what the competition does. Look at Ninty, they just do their own thing and are still around. Sega just screwed up with the DC but if they were a bigger company, they'd still be in the manufacturing business. Releasing so many consoles back to back was like giving 3rd parties a middle finger especially the way they dropped support for their old systems. This just created distrust from both gamers and developers alike and eventually led to their demise.

A smaller company would have gone bankrupt in the early years of the ps3. I got the thing 5 months after launch and spent more time playing the likes of FFXII, Persona 4 and other ps2 games mosreso than ps3 games for the 1st year or 2 after I got the console.

Exactly, smaller companies like Sega can't afford to f... up sadly. It wasn't that their products weren't good it's just Sony's marketing money overwhelmed Sega in the end. Microsoft and Sony have much more breathing room to fall back on in the case of the RROD or Sony's PSN hacking. If Sega were making the PS3 in the early years, they wouldn't have survived.

Yeah that kind of goes both ways Sony forced MS to change and vice versa with MS and Nintendo.

I think it should be mentioned, that if the PS4 makes as big loses for Sony as the PS3 did, then Sony will most certainly leave the gaming industry.

"They wanted to not let ms have a head start this time." Exactly, when Sony heard that MS was launching the 720 soon, they didn't want to be left behind again, so they reveal the PS4 out of desperation to try to rehash the Sony of yore. Sony is like the lonely forgotten child that's flailing his arms and yearns for attention.

Of course Sony doesn't want to give Microsoft a head start again. They gave Microsoft a year headstart this gen (not to mention the massive pricetag) and have been playing catch up since. It would be the excact same thing if Microsoft let Sony have a free year on the market.

You are living in delusions if you think the Playstation brand is or should be forgotten. It's still a powerful force in the industry. Nobody here said anything about Sony doing no wrong, most Playstation fans know the PS3 had a really bad launch and was handled pretty poorly at the beginning. The PS4 has been in development for about 5 years now. It's likely both Sony and Microsoft are near the end of development and nothing said or announced this far along can be seen as a move of desperation.

I like how you say "it's competition" then call Sony a "lonely forgotten child that's flailing his arms and yearns for attention". It's apparent you'd like to see Sony out of the hardware business. Think of how much the competition would suffer if Sony disappeared. What does "rehash the Sony of yore" mean? You mean selling the most consoles ASWELL as having a large library of games? Uhm yeah, isn't that every console makers wish? It certainly should be.

The hate in you is powerful indeed.

Article reads like some Sony fanboy wrote the history of consoles through his rose tinted glasses. I don't get the title of the article, it doesn't fit with reality.

Sony didn't kill Sega. Sega killed Sega. Long before PSone launched, Sega was already going down that path. As the article said, the DC was just too far ahead of its time. Regarding Nintendo, the article points out the lower sales of N64 and GCN compared to their Sony counterparts, but in the context of the article, shouldn't he also mention the fact that even though they sold less consoles, Nintendo made tons of money? So where does this "evolve or die" stuff come from?

MS came into the market to stop PS from becoming the centerpiece of home entertainment and they appear to still be on that path, so idk exactly how much you could say Sony has forced them to change either.
