Forums - Sony - Will PS3 top 100 million?

Or you can hit up this link, showing the PS3 has pretty much identical sales of the PS2 within the same amount of time, so again, it is very likely that the PS3 will be able to hit 100million, the 360 on the other hand, not so likely since its really a America only console.

Or you can realize that PS2 was only in Japan for like over half a year, and PS3 was launched in all three before PS2 launched in NA.

PS3 is undertracking the PSP, 40 million is being generous

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

There is no chance that it will reach 100 million. It might even finish behind the 360. It will not get over 65 million in a best-case scenario. That would be the strongest finish a non-winning console has ever had. I don't understand why people are predicting such huge growth.

 Evidence?

@Brawl

Technically speaking the PS2 and PS3 are on the same team, they are brothers, so if the PS2 had so much success theres a large chance many of those PS2 owners will want to enter the HD age, and go from their PS2 to a PS3, so if anything the PS3 should do much better than the PS2, as that is the current trend (PS1 < PS2 < PS3).

You, and most others, dont seem to realize that the PS3 has 3 things going for it.
1. Large PS2 fan base.
2. Blu-ray.
3. (soon to be/beginning to come true) Best looking games

PS3 seems to have had the toughest first year out of any console(highest price, poor game line-up, competition), and it still made it through with identical sales to the PS2/360's first years. So why do people think it'd be so hard for it to get to 100 million when it should start taking off with mass adoption by PS2 owners.

Username, there is no such thing as console loyalty, most PS2 owners were casual and went to PS2 because of the casual games, games that Wii now has, and Blu-ray players are coming out cheaper than PS3

Because it is quite frankly getting whooped by the Wii.

What the PS3 fanbase is currently largely consistent of is PS2 hardcores. What it will never be consistent of is the PS2 casuals. The people who bought GTA in large quantities, the 10-25 year old guys who have a moderate interest in consoles but would never ever think of joining a forum dedicated to them. Those guys have no loyalty, they don't understand why they should. The PS2 casual crowd will go for whatever is popular and currently it simply isn't the PS3.

Also if you have managed to make it this far without comprehending that the PS3's sales are not comparable to the PS2s sales in the first year you probably never will.

Since when does "large chance" = "loyalty"?

I think they are comparable, the PS2 was by itself, only in Japan for awhile, and the PS3 left out Europe for 5 months, and had two other competitors.

Also, I know very few people with solely a Wii, more have a Wii360 or WiiPS3 combo, and as HDTV become mainstream alot of people will want a HD console, so why you may not think so, the Wii beating the PS3 doesnt make much of a difference when deciding if the PS3 will hit 100 million.

I think if they could have kept GtaIV,DMC4,Assassins creed, and ut3 exclusive then yes. With those going multi-platform I'm guessing around 70-85 million,
But after the last two generations and HDTV's becoming more popular along with Blu-ray currently dominating hddvd you can't count Sony out yet of the 100mil mark just yet.
Sony also said that it could be 10 years between ps3-ps4(if they make it) that would mean 10 mil a year would get them there. they sold about 9mil in their first year and 08 is starting much better for them

- Sonys stubborn ass = serious 10 year plan.
- BR winning = more life.
- PS3 hard to tap power will mean improvements in games for a long time.
- Everything going HD wii is not hd while 360 is barely doin better then original xbox.

100 million is pretty much a sure thing.

10 year plan means nothing without support, support follows userbase not vice versa

Blu-ray players cheaper than PS3

Game imporvements mean nothing if no one is buying, weak game sales

HD adoptions is slow and most don't care

No.

I think it is quite possible.

If PS1 and PS2 can break 100 million, why can't PS3?

PS3 may have a slow start, but it will last longer than Xbox360 and Wii. PS3 probably will directly compete with Nintendo's and Microsoft's "8th gen" consoles. The developers dropped their support for PS1 too fast. But this time, they are not going to abandon PS2 any time soon. PS2 is still selling and competing with Wii, Xbox360, and ironically PS3. In fact, Nintendo's success with the Wii indirectly prolongs the lifespan of PS2 because the developers can port Wii games to PS2. I won't be surprised if PS3 repeat PS2's path.

The bottom line is, I will be extremely happy to see two consoles from the same generation top 100 million. That will be a new record.
