For any who actually bothered reading the whole article (which is doubtful, this IS the internet), the title is merely attention grabbing and misleading. The points he makes however are somewhat valid. Nintendo is a games company. The others have games divisions. Nintendo has more money in the bank than the other two's game DIVISIONS have. That much is a fact. The brunt of the article is not really arguing that either Sony or MS will drop out of the race, but rather giving a lot of solid reasons why Nintendo will not. And the fact is, Pachter has always been a joke. His "predictions" always fall into one of two categories, either shit that's blatantly obvious to everyone, or bs that over half the time winds up dead wrong (We'll be seeing a Wii HD in 2010, etc.) And it is pertinent that he ignores Japanese sales, even IF he "works for US investors". Why? Because we're talking about two major Japanese companies, Sony and Nintendo, how they do in Japan absolutely affects how they do OVERALL, and thus, if they were to do badly in Japan, it would affect US investors just the same. And to that end, Nintendo is in fact kicking the living shit out of MS and Sony in Japan, mainly with the 3DS (but MH3 is also doing well on Wii U right now, and DQX is set to drop on Wii U in Japan in March).

Anyone thinking Nintendo really IS "doomed", or that the Wii U is going to "be the next Dreamcast" or only reach "Gamecube type numbers", was completely full of shit to begin with, and that's the overall point of the article.

So all of the "lols" and whatnot.....it really does help to bother reading before reacting.

Oh most likely.
Microsoft would go software only if the hardware business wasn't profitable.
Sony look more likely to go under than Nintendo in any case and if hardware becomes too expensive then they'd probably leave the hardware business.
Nintendo have nowhere to really go, they'd keep pushing the envelope until either they made the business profitable or went out of business.

On the contrary I think a lot of people would like to spend money on 1 console rather then 3 to get the games they want. Granted 2 consoles will fill the hardware niches. I'd like to see Sony go 3rd party so I could see sony IPs on Nintendo consoles personally.

What they did when they didn't made consoles. Sony would be a(probably big) game publisher, like in the SNES era, and MS would be a big PC publisher, like, what they already are right now.

Not Microsoft, but Sony depends on the success of the PS4, given the failure the vita is.
