Forums - Nintendo - Developers need a Japanese-owned company to publish downloadable games for Wii-U/3DS in Japan?

Wii U launched with an online store and digital-only games like the quirky fireplace sim Little Inferno and Mighty Switch Force! Hyper Drive Edition. Japan’s Wii U shop isn’t as busy. You can download a few retail games like Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Wii U Edition, New Super Mario Bros. U and a free to play version of Tank! Tank! Tank!

Why isn’t Chasing Aurora available? Well, developers need a company that’s owned in Japan (i.e. 51% or more of the shares) to publish a downloadable game for Wii U or Nintendo 3DS in Japan. Nintendo published World of Goo, Square Enix released Lit, and Marvelous brought a bunch of indie WiiWare titles to Japan. Arc System Works is taking the first stab at Wii U with Nano Assault Neo, a fun twin stick shooter from Shin’en Multimedia.

Could it be because these eShop developers are too small to handle the localization process alone?

Regardless, Nintendo needs to offer some support for some of the more successful titles like Trine 2.

And they were saying they want to attract indie devs.... sure...

That's ridiculous, but at least it's not the case over here!

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

They obviously attracted already many indie devs.

Perhaps Nintendo wanted to make sure that the indies dont use google translation to "localize" their games as many ios and android developers do.

I have one right here......oooops, no, it was a fart...xD

Ouch, talk about sticking it to both small developers and customers. That's a good way to keep content off your system.

This sounds like it would be a Japanese law more than a Nintendo thing, or if it is a Nintendo thing, it would make no damn sense at all (since it only seems to apply to Japan, and if anything Nintendo gives the Japanese market preferential treatment, not trying to jerk them around like this)

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Nintend'oh.

According to the story on this on NintenoLife, it is a rule in the Japanese marketplace.

Given the traditional restrictiveness of that country's economy, such a rule would not be surprising.

I am Mario.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.
