Will the meltdowns be epic? Oh yes... More epic than that exclusive for Wii U going multi-plat that I can't tell you the name of or give you any hint about cuz frend is NDA.

Given the already high production prices for the PlayStation 4, and similarly for the Xbox 720, i seriously doubt at this point in time Microsoft would increase the memory or switch any components from the existing design 'to compete', when the overall amount of memory is the same, they will already be in contracts with the CPU/GPU manufacturer, AMD with the custom design finalized and ready for mass production, to be ready for the initial batch of consoles, this leaves Microsoft with two choices - Continue with existing spec and attempt to undercut sony on pricing to drive the sales (genuinely, i believe fully that launch prices will be very similar or the xbox 720 20-70usd less), or, they go back to the drawing board, redesign the CPU (sorry but you can't just switch from DDR3 to GDDR5 without redesigning the memory controller and all the supporting hardware), motherboard and cooling solution, possibly causing the release of the console to slip.
Look at it from microsofts perspective:
Release as-is and undercut sony on price, or
spend millions redesigning, piss off AMD for changing the finalized cpu/gpu design, increase the hardware costs and as a result, end up coming to the market late, behind Sony, with very similar or identical spec, either making less per console sold or losing more per console sold due to hardware update, and for what?.
Logic alone suggests that they'll just release as is, because the consequences of changing things now are not beneficial in any way, to Microsoft.
I'm confused as to why some people are addressing me like I think this will happen. I dont at all the PS4 will most likely be the most powerful console next gen.
I just said it would make for some major meltdowns if Xbox is more powerful. Which is true this thread has a ton of posts, a ton of views, and a ton of votes in the poll.
I think many of you aren't old enough members of this forum to remember what Vgchartz looked like in 2007-2008.It was packed with meltdowns and huge crazy prediction wars. That's all about to start again and it will be fun. These forums have been too quiet for far too long.
again as I said earlier in this thread I'n no techie but wouldn't better/higher specs=greater price tag?
who would really want to gloat that there console will cost more?
I think that the PS3 OS will use between 512mb to 1GB(MAX!) I dont know how can people think that it will be using more than that, I mean even windows XP which is a lot more complex than any OS on any console, you can run it with 128mb of ram.... I know that the OS will be doing a lot of things on the back in real time and thats why I gave the first two numbers, but its unbelievable the stupidity of some people that give false information thinking they know about hardware just because they have built a PC so they think they are Pros on the subject...
On topic: I think they will be both pretty similar and differences will be again just like last gen; marginal.

That's true, but there's still room for improvement in resolution, framerate and lighting effects. The gap would be far less noticeable than it was this gen with the same power difference between the PS3 and Xbox 360 though.

so whats this

"It was a beautiful PR move at the sony conference because people dont know much about hardware."
what PR move? the machine has 8Gbs and that is it... the OS will take its part and the rest is to run PS4 software (GAMES), the games will use the memory between CPU and GPU, but what size will have on both ends its irrelevant because its ALL for "dzee GAMEz"...

haha yes. Ok let me explain it this way. You can make something sound much better than what it is by playing around with umbers. I'll use an example.
Let's say you are reading a bottle oon a soda and it says 1 out of every 10 people will win an award. That sounds goo right? Now how does 10 out of 100 sounds? how abound 100 out of 1000? or 1000 out of 10,000. Now 10,000 out of 100,000. That number is sounds worst with higher numbers than lower numbers.
In this case it does in fact have 8gb but not all of those gb's are for dedicated memory which is what people are not realizing. If they said that the OS has 2Gb and the GPU has 2GB and the RAM has 4GB it suddenly sounds worst right? but instead they lumped it together (Which is true still) and suddenly that number appears higher than what it actually is for games.
THis comes down to a difference of gamers and developers. Gamers who dont realize this gets excited due to the high number. Developers also get excited but not for the same reason, they can play around with those numbers and they actually know what it means, where as you the gamer really doesnt.
This is why i said it was a beautiful PR move and it obviously was or else it wouldnt be all over forumes right now ;)
