My very first thread in Vgchartz! I was actually reluctant to write one, as I've just been here for a week or something like that. But in any case! Let's go to the point:
I've recently started playing Geometric Wars Retro Evolved2, and man! What an awesome game. No, no, seriously. It's a blast, especially if you're playing with four friends (No online co-op, though, but offline, which for me it is the one that matters). Really, really awesome. It just simple, pure fun. So this question came to my mind, and I would like to ask all of you (of course, with an explanation everything is better =P ), which has been your favourite game/games of this generation? These are my answers:
Braid. As simple as this game can be seen (And subject of debate where Games should be consider as art; however, I've always thought that this game was not an exemplary case of this), the way you need to use your brain in order to solve a puzzle only compares with Portal 2's puzzles. Seriously. You need to think from a different perspective considering this is a 2D sidescrolling platforming game, yet the puzzles are incredible well-crafted. I recommend everyone to give this one a shot.
Geometric Wars Retro Evolved 2. I love it. I just love it. There is no story in this game, no graphical beast whatsoever; just a simple but fun mechanic gameplay alongside a great soundtrack. Your purpose is merely staying alive against the odds in six different modes (Albeit one of them is just a variant of another). The thing is, you can play in cooperative or competitive offline up to 4 players at the same time. It is a challenging game, once you've gathered enough points in a single match. It is weird, and addictive. You'll end up spending lots of hours in it.
I am Alive. A flawed and short, if not interesting adventure. I really like the subject they went through in this game and, considering the troublesome development, this was not thankfully another Duke Nukem Forever or Alien: Colonial Marines. Imagine an Uncharted or Assassin's Creed (without the charismatic main character, at least in Uncharted - as I have not played any Assassin's) gameplay style, just with less action and more exploration. Against all odds, this is a linear adventure. But I enjoyed every second of it. I could understand that the game's flaws may put people off, but if you can endure them, then this is a must.
The Walking Dead: The Game. Yeah, yeah, this one's controversial. Lot of people loved it, others dissmised it because your choices were meaningfulness. This is no Heavy Rain, that I can guarantee (It forces you, however, to make some choices you didn't want, that is also something Heavy Rain did). But I liked it, just because it was not "just another zombie game". Mind you, I love the zombie genre. Since I was a little kid. I don't like the mainstreaming it has get (Which eventually lead to the extenuation of the genre), but this is everything Dead Island was supposed to be, judging "that" trailer. Seriously, it is a beautiful adventure. And I love point n' clicks, too.
I don't remember any more, but I've surely played lots of arcade games this gen, and there are more gems buried underneath the marketing of AAA games. Just for the record, there are two games I have yet not played, but I want: Fez (Although I hate the creator!), Trials and Journey.
So, what has been your favourite arcade/indie of this generation?
