4th gen - Not born
5th gen - Born, but too young

6th gen - I first received my brother's GBA and a year or two later I got a GCN for my birthday. During the same time, my brother had a PS2, so both of us played the two systems. When GBA SP released I got that and traded in my GBA. I played the crap out of Emerald, Scaler, Wind Waker, Double Dash, Sunshine and Gran Turismo 4.

7th gen - I bought myself a NDS Lite during 2007, when Diamond released. Played the crap out of that and got a Wii during Christmas of 2007. During the same time my brother had a 360, sometimes I could play on it. When my brother moved I lost access to his 360. I played the crap out of Platinum, Mystery Dungeon 2, SSBB, Terraria, Runescape, Ranger 2 and Galaxy 2.

8th gen - Bought my 3DS day one and was close to buy a Wii U durin its launch and in the beginning of February.
During this gen I will get a Wii U, but late this year. I might get a PS4 in 3-4 years time or a new PC.
I have not played the crap out of any game yet this gen, except for one that is listed in 7th gen.

5th gen: PS1 was my first console and my first game was Crash Bandicoot and soon to come games like Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, and Spyro would be all I needed for the PS1.

6th Gen: Again the PS2 was my only console with games like Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, Gran Turismo again, and Final Fantasy X, X-2, XII among other RPG's this console is the most memorable in my book.

7th Gen: I abandoned the Sony console and went with Xbox 360, I became infatuated with Halo and loved the early JRPG's that came out for the system, and Mass Effect, Gears of War, Alan Wake all just cemented my love for this console. Although I did eventually get the PS3 (last year).

3rd Gen - Master System - my first console and Sonic in 8 bit glory. Fave Game - Sonic 2

4th Gen - Mega Drive, Game Gear & Game Boy - Sonic's golden era and what hooked me onto gaming. Plus the two awesome handhelds. Fave Game - Sonic 2

5th Gen - Playstation & Gameboy Colour - Loved my Playstation, but always regretted missing out on the N64. But the games were too expensive (some were 3 times as much!!) Fave Game - Syphon Filter/Final Fantasy 9

6th Gen - Gamecube, Xbox, GBA, GBA SP - Gamecube was my first launch day console. My favourite console ever as well, pure perfection. It also had the best game ever made and my 1st Zelda, The Wind Waker! Xbox was good, although I though Halo was way too over-rated. PS2 never interested me, my least favourite console. GBA was awesome too, great games. Fave Game - LoZ: Wind Waker

7th Gen - Wii, Xbox 360 & DS - Got the Wii for all the Nintendo games, 360 came along a while later so I could play all the 3rd party games (COD, Mass Effect). 360 also gave me Mass Effect trilogy. Never got fully into the DS though, not sure why. Fave Game - Mass Effect 1-3/SSBB

8th Gen - WiiU & 3DS - Got the WiiU again for all the Nintendo titles (Pikmin 3), great console so far. 3DS was bought once Luigi's Mansion 2 was annouced. Glad I did as the 3DS has the latest gens best title so far. For my 2nd console, it is swinging towards the PS4, as I don't won't a console with built in Kinect or have netflix & lovefilm as its primary purpose. Fave Game - Kid Icarus:Uprising

This post is full of win!!!! A real gamer!

Lol, thanks. But I don't think you have to have a long history do be a real gamer. Loving games and not the companies that make them makes you a "real" gamer and seperates the true gamers from the fanboy haters.

For me

1st gen : Simple Pong style console. 2 wired controllers and 6 modes which where nearly all virtually the same game. Monochrome (circa 1978)

2nd gen : Atari 2600 bought in 1982. Played Pitfall and Bezerk to death.

3rd gen : No purchase

4th gen : No purchase

5th gen : Nintendo 64. Loved it. Mario 64 was insane and Zelda remains a classic. Special shout outs to Golden eye and Banjo and Kazooie.

6th gen : PS2 and Gamecube. Actually preferred the GC. I missed Resident Evil first time round and the remake is for me the definitive version. Also Metroid and two Zelda titles made the GC a great machine to own. Sadly the multi plat games sucked terribly and were compromised so the PS2 was a necesary late purchase. Was rewarded with God of War 1 & 2 and the Burnout series.

7th gen : Wii. Xbox 360, PS3 in that purchase order. Wii was cleverly priced and was a simple impulse buy. I enjoyed it but never found it overly compelling. However its still brought out at parties so they must have got something right.

The 350 hooked me with Dead Rising. I remember wanting the game so bad. In the end i got a deal of the console bundled wth Halo plus a spare controller bundled with Forza 2 and they gave me Dead Rising 2nd hand for free.

The PS3 was purchased last primarily due to price and also my being put off by countless shoddy ports. Reminded me of the multiplat situation with the GameCube and I didnt want that again. Eventually the price fell and I got to cut my teeth on the exclusives I missed. The shoddy ports are largely a thing of the past and it has become my main console. Largely due to available space under the TV.

8th gen : I'll probably wait till 2014 unless there are amazing launch titles. I doubt that though. In living memory only the N64 launched with any decent games. Pilotwings and Maro 64.

As for which console I buy, well that depends.

The 360  got so much right Im eager to see its successor.

However Sony seem to have opted for a more mainstream architecture this gen and that can only help them. The C3LL was just that, a prison for Sony and their Devs. Also quite like the new controller and the brave decision to announce first.

Just hope we getmore great games

Third gen: Amstrad cpc 6128 - first gaming memories

Fourth gen: Sega Mega Drive - my favourite console ever

Fith gen: Playstation 1 - amazing console and 2nd favourite console

Sixth gen: Playstation 2 - got bored this gen and was thinking of buying a gamecube

Seventh gen: Nintendo Wii - refreshing and reminded me why i love gaming, great console

Eighth gen: Nintendo WiiU - loving the U so far

Had them little football gaming pads that came in cerials when i was young, had a dsixl and a 3ds which i had to sell to buy my WiiU

1st gen - I was not born/too young for the consoles of this gen.

2nd gen - My grandmother gave my brothers and I an Atari 2600 with loads of games. This was well into the 3rd gen though, but it was my first taste of video games.

3rd gen - We had an NES when I was a kid. I used to stay up way too late playing Mario Bros over and over again. Also remember Jackal, Ninja Gaiden, Guardian Legends, Wrath of the Black Manta. So many awesome games. I was also going with my grandmother to the bowling alley every Friday and I would spend hours in the arcades. Mainly playing Pit Fighter and Double Dragon. When I was around 10 or so I went to a friends house and got a taste of Battletoads for the first time and then TMNT and I was pretty much hooked as a gamer for life. I had a small amount of experience playing the Master System at a friends house but I just was not strong enough for what Sega was bringing yet.

4th gen - Got a Genesis for Christmas and that was my first console of this gen. I played tons of Mortal Kombat in the arcades so naturally I got the Genesis version. My brother had an SNES but for the most part I was content with my Genesis. I probably missed out on some good SNES games, but I played plenty of them too I guess. This was also the gen where I got into handhelds for the first and only time. I had a Game Boy and hated it, sold it. Got a Game Gear and it was amazing, but the battery life was terrible. Towards the end of the gen I got a SegaCD and it was pretty awesome, it was kind of like a whole new gen of gaming with the same Genesis console I'd always owned.

5th gen - This was the first gen where I really could get my own stuff as I was 17 and working. As a result I owned a 3DO, Saturn, PSone, and N64. The PSone got by far the most play time. The 3DO only had a few games that were really good and I eventually sold it. The Saturn was incredible.. it was just too hard to find the gems as I did not have a credit card to use the Internet to buy things. I got an N64 a couple years after it launched JUST to play 007 after I had played it at a friends house. It was really an amazing MP machine. But PSone had Soul Reaver, MGS, Destruction Derby Raw, SF EX+, SotN, GT2, Tony Hawk, etc. I spent way too many hours playing it. I actually wore one out playing it so much it eventually stopped spinning discs.

6th gen - Maybe my favorite gen? Idk. It started with definitely my all time favorite console, the Dreamcast. Really the most clear cut generational leap we have seen imho. It really blew the PSone and N64 away. Best launch ever too. But Sega was too ambitious and revolutionary for their own good. Pioneered online play and even charged for it way before people started griping about XBL. Of course I eventually got a PS2 as well. I believe I waited until GT3 came out, I might be mistaken though. I remember being immensely disappointed in MGS2, and being just blown the **** away by GTA3 and SOCOM. When Xbox came around we all knew about their partnership with Sega so I had to snatch one up at launch and of course I grabbed Halo. Played through it multiple times with my brother. Amazing. Eventually they launched Live and took online gaming to a new level. I alternated between playing mostly MP on 360 and playing SP/SOCOM on PS2. Never even crossed my mind to buy a GCN.

7th gen - First console I got was the 360. It took almost a year for a game that really seemed "next gen" to come out and that of course was Gears. Just an amazing game, especially in MP. Got a PS3 when Killzone 2 launched. It was not as good as KZ imho but ended up way better than KZ3. It's funny, I now have the same type of split as I did last gen. Most MP titles, unless my brothers or friends are getting the PS3 version, I will buy on 360 for Live. SP games I pretty much stick to PS3 for. Got the Wii but mostly for the kiddos for Christmas. I don't think I have ever sat down and seriously tried to play a game on it. Well, I take that back. I downloaded some NES titles like TMNT and SMB2 and enjoyed those. Also quite a bit of World of Goo.

8th gen - Liking the WiiU but waiting before I jump in. Not sure what's gonna happen between PS4/Nextbox yet, undecided.

1st Gen - N/A

2nd Gen - Didn't have much a part in it since I was not born for most of it, but my dad did have an old Atari 2600 stored away in our basement that he'd occasionally bring out and we'd play some Space Invaders and a bunch of other games I can't remember.

3rd Gen - NES - Basically grew up on this along with the Super NES. Had so many great times with my friends and family playing games like Super Mario/Duck Hunt, Mario 3, Bubble Bobble, and Bugs Bunny's Crazy Castle (my parents selected my games in those days lol).

4rd Gen - SNES - Still the golden age of gaming for me. I played the SNES religiously and still often bust it out to this day. It just doesn't get much better than Super Mario World, Secret of Mana, Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2, Yoshi's Island, Mario RPG, Turtles in Time, etc..

5th Gen - N64 - Yet again sticking with only a Nintendo console as I was still too young to really have a say in my video game purchases, and I was only allowed one console (my dad was weird about me playing too many video games), so naturally I chose Nintendo since that is what I grew up with and knew. Though I still had some great times with my N64 with games like Smash Bros, Mario Kart, and Mario 64.. and Goldeneye, my god that was simply mind blowingly awesome to me. This was the generation of the multiplayer games for me, as many of my 64 games were just a blast to play with friends and family. Still play a few today, as the replay value never seems to die thanks to the outstanding multi.

6th Gen - Gamecube/Dreamcast/Gaming PC - This was the first generation I owned multiple consoles as I was finally reaching the age where I could buy my own games, and thus decide on what I wanted. Obviously by this point I was so deeply conditioned to buy Nintendo products that the Gamecube was an obvious choice. Had great memories of me and my friend lining up for the midnight launch and playing Luigi's Mansion and Tony Hawk 3 until our eyes bled. However, I also craved more than Nintendo's offerings, so once Sega desperately docked the price of the Dreamcast shortly before exiting the hardware business, I also opted for a Dreamcast. My sister was obsessed with Space Channel 5 so she really wanted one too, and I was curious to experience the great Sega titles I had missed out on over the years. Sadly, Sega bit the dust right as I was starting to warm up to them and go from hated enemy to huge fan. Very nearly opted for a PS2 but after the GC, DC, and PC, I figured I had enough games to last me awhile. My first ever gaming PC was bought towards the end of this gen, which was primarily used to snag the few Xbox titles I cared about, and to play Everquest 2.

7th Gen - Wii/360 - Continuing on my Nintendo + "other" console tradition, I spent the early part of this gen wavering between getting a PS3 and 360. I knew I wanted one of these consoles to compliment my Wii to handle most third party offerings, but was unsure which. I was actually pretty set on getting a PS3 until Sony scared me away with their outrageous price tag of $599. Plus, as MS snagged my favorite non Nintendo developer, Rareware, I decided to opt for a 360. Didn't quite get to appreciate it until I experienced Gears, Oblivion, and Dead Rising about a year later. I still play Gears 3 religiously. In 06 I bought a Wii, and it was then that I truly felt like I was playing something new. The feeling of playing Wii Sports for the first time was surreal, and I was amazed that my entire family at thanksgiving wanted in, from my grandmother to my 5 year old cousin. I don't see that experience being matched anytime soon. Then there were the countless nights of drunken Mario Kart and Smash Brothers.. Some great times. Sadly now my Wii has pretty much been dwindled down to Xenoblade, but I still rock the Xbox 360 with Black Ops and Gears 3.

7.5 Gen - New gaming PC - I say 7.5 because playing a few games like Far Cry 3 on max settings looks better than anything I've played on 360, though PS4 games will probably outdo it, at least the later ones. Anyway, I finally decided it was time to upgrade my gaming experience after 6 years, and since Wii U doesn't quite interest me at the moment and MS and Sony's consoles are probably far off, I decided to jump on a cyber monday deal on amazon, landing a gaming PC and new 24 inch monitor for about $900, which together normally costs around $1500. Been enjoying some Starcraft II, Far Cry 3, and Dragon Age since then, and that's where I stand now.

8th Gen - I still plan on buying a Wii U, I'm just not sure when. Ideally I'd like to wait for a price drop, in addition to Mario Kart and Smash, but I MIGHT invest sooner if I can find some financial sucess earlier than expected. I'm also back to chosing between Sony and MS's next console but an unsure which. Will this be the generation I finally buy a sony console? O_o A lot of factors are going to come into play, such as BC, price, ability to play used games, online service, etc. Either way though, my gaming PC is enough to tide me over for awhlie so I probably won't get involved in this gen for quite awhile.

Cool topic.

1st: My older brothers had some football/space invaders type handheld machines which seemed cool and I got to play a bit.

2nd: This is where things started to take off. My neighbors had Atari and we would play Asteroids and other classics, while my family had a ColecoVision. This is when I met Mario and have enjoyed his jumping antics ever since.

3rd: NES. Videogame craze took over me and all of my friends. The first Christmas that guys started getting them was crazy. Every parent was nuts trying to find an NES and every kid was obsessed with the mysteries of Super Mario Bros. What cassle was that princess in? Being the first to fire a silver arrow into Gannon's wicked heart was a lifetime highlight, lol.

4th: SNES. Such an amazing system where I picked up lots of games. My family still plays it to this day. Street Fighter. Super Mario. Donkey Kong. Final Fantasy. Castlevania. Super Bomberman and MarioKart saw lots of multiplayer matches. This may have been my peak as far as gaming, even if NES was more of a classic and interesting time.

5th: None. Got out of gaming for a while. Was in University and had other things sucking up my time. Played a little PC. Some friends had either Playstations or N64's but neither system really drew me in. Early 3d was a bit sloppy and the divide that formed between 3rd parties that I loved and Nintendo games that I loved frustrated me such that neither PS or N64 was a total sell. Years later I picked up OoT and MM and I have to say they were absolutely incredible to play on the borrowed N64 I had at the time.

6th: XBox, PS2, PSP. Toward the end of my collage years my roomates had an all-new XBox and I played Halo. I was once again a gamer. The game was groundbreaking for me. I ended up also getting a PS2 and I was really impressed. Loved FFX. PSP was my first handheld and it had a great high-tech feel. Eventually I bored of it though and I doubt I would buy another handheld. I was also jealous of the cheaper DS and NSMB. I wished I had bought that instead, especially as phones started functioning as MP3 players.

7th: Wii, XBox360. After totally rejecting Nintendo during the purple Gamecube years, I returned when I saw the Wii. I was so very impressed with TP, WiiSports and Mario Galaxy. I didn't have an HDTV so I had no need for an HD system. Wii was outstanding fun with friends and the system itself was cool. The Virtual Console was like revelation. Once I picked up an HDTV I wanted HD gaming. Got an XBox in a sweet deal and it took over quickly as my prime system. Got tired fo motion controls and the game selection on 360 was just better with the 3rd party support.

8th: WiiU. First system I bought at launch since SNES. Very impressed. After Wii I feel very confident that some great 1st party games are coming and 3rd party support might be good. Nice to finally play Nintendo in HD. Tablet makes for a great media center. I am closely watching both Sony and MS to see if what they offer will coax me to buy a second system.

I will list only consoles I have... not what I played (eg. Atari, Arcades, NES, etc).

3th gen: Master System (everybody in Brazil had this console)

4th gen: SNES and Megadrive. SNES was my favorite due FF6, Secret of Mana, Starfox, Donkey Kong and Super Mario World.

5th gen: PlayStation... no more need for other consoles.

6th gen: PS2. My favorite of all the time.

7th gen: PS3. My second favorite console... the best games I ever played.

8th gen: PS4. I don't need anything else.
