Forums - Gaming - Microsoft (Major Nelson) comments on PS4

Why is it so important to show a boring box?

This is a console reveal. You need to show the console. It's a psychological thing: We need to see the box that will power the games and experiences the PS4 offers. Otherwise, the PS4 will feel incredibly abstract. It won't feel real.

Quoted from Kotaku. Gotta admit, it was kinda weird and fans would have loved to see it.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

I actually hoped to see the device but come on it is not a big deal. And I am sure it looks a lot better then Microsofts box.

While looks are subjective, to say the current PS3 looks nicer than the current 360 is nuts imo.  The original PS3 rivals the current xbox but the "slim" revisions aren't lookers which is why doubting the aesthetics of the actual PS4 is justified.  Time will tell though.

The super slim looks really bad but the slim and the fat on look a lot better then the Xbox. Both XBoxes look alot alike and are really unatractive. But the look is secondary anyway.

"it is not a big deal. And I am sure it looks a lot better then Microsofts box."...apparently you do....here's a bad thought, what if it's the ugliest one of the three? I can see the headlines from the Sony haters..."Sony too embarrassed to display their hideous looking PS4 to the public".
My guess is that they don't have the final form done yet.

This - They probably only have the prototype design we have seen a few days ago.
They will probably show the real thing on the E3...And who cares.
I would buy a Hello Kitty Breadbox if this thing is that powerful and destroys everything on the market.

At least Sony showed what people wanted to see.
New IPs,New Engines and demonstrated with Killzone 4(and other games of course) how powerful that baby will be.
They also managed to convince everyone their console is a complete change over the PS3 and is a safe bet....The 3rd Party won't ignore the PS4 and they know what they have on that console this time.
Its an extrem powerful machine developed by developers for developers. This is what everyone hoped for and Sony showed that.

At E3 we probably will see the final design and get a price.
Then we will also see the games of Naughty Dog and Santa Monica Studios go crazy and kill our eyes with the beauty they created.

Sony did everything the developers expected and wanted. They did more than great.
They even stole directly the new "CoD" from Microsoft.Destiny is now best on PS4 after it was supposed to be a timed exclusive for Xbox.
They showed they still care for the whole community - They didn't start of with pew pew Killzone 4 > They showed Knack a game for everyone.
They showed games from every genre(something Microsoft won't with REAL Games..Kinect Games are Casual stuff ) with extreme high quality and showed of how well the Unreal Engine 4 and a few others are running on their system.Especially the UE4 is a big keypart here. The UE3 didn't work well with the PS3 but it was the most used Engine in this Gen.
The UE4 is working flawless on PS4 and will be the most used engine again.

You people have to think from what Sony is coming.
How they fixed all the problems they had with the PS3 in terms of 3rd Party and everyone outside of their inner circle.
Their Online Service is going to dominate like PSN+ is right now - The Move seems to work extrem precisely and will be a good used gadget for games like that sculpture thing what looked like a Minecraft with CGI Quality Graphics but it won't be a must have thing for games unlike Kinect probably.

This is a little ironic coming from the company that was running games on Mac workstations at its first, pre-360 release, E3.

you mean the render-targets at e3 2k5 sony showed?

What. It isn't Sony here that is taking the shots. It's the MS guy, and it's ironic because they did the same with 360...

No they didn't.

When MS had Mac's running 360 demos at E3 kiosks, there was still an Xbox 360 console inside each kiosk that the gamer could see. So they still showed a console. Not to mention, that E3 was not the unveiling of the 360. MS revealed the 360 on MTV before E3. And the very first thing they did was have someone bring out a bag and pull out the 360 and put it in the center of the room so everyone could see it.

So it's virtually the exact opposite of what Sony did in their reveal event. No irony there.

But who gives a **** what Major Nelson thinks.

Glaring omissions are always worthy of comment. I wouldn't say his comments were insulting, mocking, or even all that inflammatory. That was actually Sony by not unveiling a actual console at their console unveil. Psychologically speaking it undermines everything they were trying to accomplish. Instead of the discussion revolving around how cool the console is. Now the conversation is revolving around the fact that there wasn't a box, and what that would mean.

Look at how many of the hardcore Sony fans are chalking it up to the console not actually being complete. That is actually a bad sign. It raises like can Sony get the console to market it the time frame they outlined. Will they be able to manufacture enough units. Will the final product have sufficient quality testing. All things that were problems with the 360 and the Wii.

Showing the box even if it was empty. Would have at least created the impression that Sony actually has their ship in order. Not showing the box actually implies that something is wrong. Like as many Sony fans have pointed out that Sony is still fiddling with the design. Folks Sony should be starting manufacture of the units within the next couple of months if they have any hope to have enough to meet a really solid demand for the holiday season. Unless they are not going to do a global launch.

Major Nelson is just repeating what everyone else is repeating humorously I might add. How can you unveil a game console, and not actually show the game console. It doesn't make sense, and it has never made sense. It really doesn't make sense this close to a consoles launch.

Actually, I really hope the final design is already done and tested.

The console is not only a box where the components go. The console and its shape is what dictates how much airflow the components get, so at this stage they really should know how big of a box they need or how many fans/vent holes will the box need to run their components without overheating.

Personally, I think deskpro2k3 is right.

why don't post all tweets of him? i mean when he said that "he loves to work in this industry because of so much passion and creativity and great games" short after the announcement it was obviously also only because of that and that sounds pretty positive.

yet he is saying one thing he didn't like and people jump on it

btw his team watching the conference lol

No, I mean '360 games' running on Mac workstations at E3 2005, and not 360 hardware.

(And don't make he grave error that I'm a PS fanboy, but Nelson's comment is asinine in light of MS' previous history on this matter on 360 *and* XBOX.)

They did but they officially said that it was running on mac - the render-targets from Sony were talked about after E3 when Sony had to admit that the demos didn't show real hardware which could also be seen when the PS3-KZ2 was shown.

They did what? When MS revealed their machines neither were running on final silicon. Sony did the same thing last night and somehow Nelson thinks this is 'quaint', which is hilarious given their own previous behavior

Personally, I wish SONY had final (or at least working) hardware so we would have a better idea of how realistic the WIP games will be, graphics-wise, on actual machines.

Because Sony fans are active right now and something that WILL be perceived as a slight coming from one of the most popular representatives of their competition will get a lot of web traffic.  Internet Traffic Whoring 101.

I still think their is a secret so they didn't do the full reveal.
