Well, a game like FFVII didn't become as big as it did due to impeccable gameplay, fyi. |
That's true. Presentation, music, cinematic cut-scenes, and storytelling all played parts in that game's greatness. But the game is ultimately great because of how it plays.

No, it's actually great because of its Presentation, music, cinematic, cut-scenes and storytelling.
We're talking about the same FFVII right? (SPOILER DO NOT READ IF NOT PLAYED YET:) The one where Aeris dies? Yeah that one.

Happyd, not everyone has played the game. Try to be mindful of spoilers.
If you really believe that, you might want to invest more in movies as a hobby. Games are meant to be played, not watched.

Sorry :(
I thought it was old enough, but ok I updated my post.
But yeah I completely disagree with that. Games involve the gamer in the story. You realize that's why Link is called Link, right?

Using The Legend of Zelda as an example for this argument is a dangerous game.
This is from an interview with Dylan Cuthbert, the founder of Q-Games:
"I remember many years ago when I presented an idea for a game with elaborate concept art and a strong storyline to Miyamoto-san at Nintendo and he quickly rushed through the document and then said 'ok, and where’s the game?' He then went onto a bit of a rant about how games should be made from a core concept and only vaguest of story concepts, and then once you find the core of the game you start layering on the story and the world, and he used Zelda as an example of this."

I'm aware of that, and that's what's making me upset with Nintendo. I used Link as an example not to show that Nintendo's particularly good at that, but they did make it happen for OoT for me, personally. I believe that the principle is there, and they adhere to it (to create a bond between the player and the game), and that was to prove a point that games are meant to have that element of engagement that movies just can't have because in a movie you're an observer, not an actor.

How will it be inferior?

I guess what I don't understand is that you wrote earlier that you were getting sick of Nintendo. But Nintendo has, in the past few years, moved closer to your ideal than ever before. Games like Metroid: Other M and Skyward Sword are quite heavy on story and storytelling, much more so than previous games in their respective franchises.
I suppose we just have to agree to disagree about the primacy of story in video games, since it seems like neither of us will budge :)
Yeah, you could get Watchdogs on the Wii U, and maybe you can control your inventory, maps, hacking, etc with the gamepad. But if you get it on the ps4, you'll be able to use the innovative touchpad in order to make your character dodge attacks. Which seems more useful to you? The answer is obvious- PS4 FTW!
