...nobody at my work knows what a wiiU is, and when they hear it, they're like "is that like a new thing for the wii?"

Ya know this is sad.
I was just talking with a coworker about AC3. He asked me which console I bought it on and I said Wii U.
After a few minutes talking about the game, he asks so what's the wii u? Is it just that controller screen? I said 'well, yeah its the new console and it has a controller with a screen'... he said... 'oh wait, its a new console? not just a add on?'
Yes. Nintendo has not been very effective at defining Wii U as a new console. They are lucky they didn't sell the gamepad separately day one otherwise you'd have all kinds of negative press of people buying just the gamepad.
btw, he too already knew about the basics of the PS4 and didn't care that the console itself wasn't shown. See the difference just a name can make?

exactly. Even though IMO with its specs, Nintendo's "one year late" with U, they had to release a console for its own business/hardcore fanbase. They'll come out swinginng at E3 with awesome software, MULTIPLE GAMEPAD SUPPORT (<prediction) smarter advertising & a price drop to combate M$ony.

To be fair these are the type of people that refer to any gaming device as a Playstation, Nintendo, or Xbox no matter what console they are really trying to refer to.

One of my friends thinks everyone in the world has been killed by robots, then been skinned so the robots can wear their skin to trick him into thinking they're his old friends and family while they plot to kill him as well. That is pretty sad, that Nintendo hasn't adequatly communicated their value proposition to some consumers I can live with.
My wife thought the Wii U was an attachment. I don't where I went wrong. She even had to clarify with me weeks after I told her what it was. I didn't marry her because she was into gaming and though she plays a little bit I wish she was as geeky as me about it. I guess it is more a problem because we moved away from all our friends after college.
Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(
