Am I missing your point? As it sounds like you think CC and Versus will be bad from what we know of it so far.

I'm not disagreeing it's just that people as part of their usual moaning always talk about how japanese RPGs should return to the good old days.
Versus is new and I think it's part of the reason they teased it so early, to get people's reactions on something so radically different.
Here's what I believe: had the game we know as Versus been release in 2010 as XIII, an action-rpg with a guy lots called emo back in 2006 (yeah i remember) today the moaning would be exactly the same but it would be for the other XIII with the pink haired chick.
The grass is always greener on the other side for self proclaimed Final Fantasy fans and there are as many sides as there are sequels.

I distinctly remember polls had Versus being the more popular of the two long before FFXIII actually released.
I do agree tho, fans should make up their mind. So many scream they want "Traditional Turn Based" yet when those types of games release like WKC they swear it was something foreign to them and say things like it moves too slow(when in fact WKC was just a turn based JRPG where the characters did not stay stationary and the ATB-like bar moved much faster than they would normally in that type of game). This is why SE has actively been persuing the mix of both (FFXII's combat is the definition of this, and FFXIII is more so leaning TB but still actiony). What is really means is that it is impossible to please both sides, so the hybrids SE has actually come up with are probably better suited for the series. (I actually like FFXIII's battle system, just wish it wasn't so restrictive with things like switching team members, really loved FFXII and think that was the best battle set up in the series).
There is solace in the idea that Action RPGs are on the rise right now, so Versus being closer to that makes it more appealing to most, not to mention the devoid of cotton candy color schemes and darker storytelling which is the opposite of FFXIII. THIS is what fans really wanted in their FF games I think.
