Nintendo really made the 3DS the console of choice in Japan. Really if you live in japan, and have those tastes, the 3DS is easily easily the best console on the market. Over there, nothing else on the market has the sheer magnitude of games that are craved so much.

Nintendo needs to really kick it up in the west though. Zelda I think will play a big role in doing so. Honestly, I don't think a handheld will ever dominate in the west like it does in the east, but I think Nintendo could be doing a lot better over here.

Pokemon is going to really set the 3DS aflame in the west, and further push it in the east. I think people are underestimating the first 3D pokemon. I expect really big numbers.
