Forums - Sales - January 2013 NPD Thread - 360: 281k, Wii U: 57k, PSV: 35k

Why is it that GFK can track games that are bundled with hardware, but not NPD?

Well I guess the only solace that can come out of this is that its rock bottom, but with next gen console announcements on the way, i'm sure they are going to eat at future Wii U sales. For Sony and Microsoft, they CANNOT repeat what the Wii U is doing, they have to take this launch as lesson learned and do everything not to repeat it.

Price cut and anything drastic will most likely cost Nintendo profitability for this year and probably years to come, I can see why the stock is trading near all time lows in the US (~ two dollars above)

well I don't think February will be any better...could be worse. It's a software wasteland this month for wiiu afaik. March will bring a boost since some solid software releases are taking place

Feburary should be lower actually, which is frightening, because January this year was a 5 week month, Feburary is already shorter than any month, but especially compared to January this year for NPD.

Plus the only big release for the Wii U in Feb (Rayman) just flew away.

This probably kills any chance of Nintendo hitting their Fiscal Year Wii U forecast.  If it is at 940k in the US, North American sales are likely around 1050k.  They had shipped 1320k for last quarter.  So with 2 months to go there are still ~270k units left in the channel.  With only 8 more weeks in the quarter it will at the very best reach 1200k if sales improve in March.    That would still leave 120k units left in the channel, enough to last a couple months.

Japan probably won't sell through its initial shipment until March, so they are unlikely to see any more than maybe 200k.

Europe had only sold through about half the shipment to others in 2012.  If the drops there are consistent with Japan and the US, it won't sell through that shipment for a long long time.

Even if we toss in another 200k for regional differences (i.e. even if they overshipped to Europe overall, an individual country might have better sell-through) then they would still be almost 500k short of their slashed forecast.

Callahan added that PlayStation 3 software was down 2% compared to last year (when adjusting for the five-week period), and 3DS sales were only down 4%. He also noted that accessory sales were up 4% compared to a year ago, and that “Skylanders accessory sales continue to impress and made up five of the top ten accessory SKUs sold this month.”

PS3 software down only 2% per week compared to last year... AMAZING!!!

Im really, really curious to see what Nintendo have at E3.

What are we expecting, guys? Wii Sports U? 3D Mario? Smash Bros.? Will they wait until the Holidays for a pricecut?

3D Mario and Mario Kart should definitely be there, and they really need some Smash Bros. footage. Other than that, who knows?

where PS3 at? over 200k?

Most likely. Unless Wii surprised everyone and sold a lot suddenly.

At least they have the balls to give us numbers each month unlike some, so give credit where its due.

My guess is they are going to start to megabundle now as much as possible rather than a sharp price cut which would incur pure cash bleeding.

$299.99 w/Nintendo Land + NSMBU (free download) for spring. Free VC titles for "Ambassadors".

Basic bundle phased out

Drop to $269.99 come October/November.

Iwata steps down at the end of the year, stays on as development consultant.
