Forums - Sales - January 2013 NPD Thread - 360: 281k, Wii U: 57k, PSV: 35k

why are people talking like if the wiiu was going to sell like this for the rest of it's LT. wii u is not selling for 3 reasons: 1. no must-buy games 2. bad economy in general 3. high price.

Predictions for LT console sales:

PS4: 120M

XB1: 70M

WiiU: 14M

3DS: 60M

Vita: 13M

Well I guess the only solace that can come out of this is that its rock bottom, but with next gen console announcements on the way, i'm sure they are going to eat at future Wii U sales. For Sony and Microsoft, they CANNOT repeat what the Wii U is doing, they have to take this launch as lesson learned and do everything not to repeat it.

Price cut and anything drastic will most likely cost Nintendo profitability for this year and probably years to come, I can see why the stock is trading near all time lows in the US (~ two dollars above)

can nintendo even scrape to E3 before cutting the price? they may not be able to. 10k a week in the US, less than 50k a week worldwide, price cut needed NOW.

As a Nintendo fan, I view these Wii U sales as good news, for a few reasons:

1. Price drop almost has to be coming soon now, at which point I might actually buy a Wii U.

2. Iwata has to be gone soon after this. Sorry Iwata, I enjoyed your quirky banana staring ways, but you just don't have what it takes to be running Nintendo's business side anymore. time for him to go the way of Ken Kutaragi.

3. May force Nintendo to go back to the Wii route and start appealing to a mass market audience again. After all, it was only after Nintendo hit dire straights with the Gamecube that they were essentially forced to take this route. Hopefully this will snap them out of their stubbornness and wake them up once again. Sometimes you need to hit rock bottom before you can start to take the climb to the top.

Nintendo still cater to the mass market. They launched with a 2D Mario and a mini game collection full of Nintendo stuff. There isnt much more mass market than that, is there?

The console needs a pricecut and a healthy set of new releases.

Sales this low indicate that people don't like the concept of the console period.

Perhaps going away from motion gaming was the kiss of death, after all, how well would Wii Sports have done if you had to play it with this:

Microsoft and Sony are doing good despite being in their 8th and 7th years.

More from GAF.

Oh yeah, forgot the GC came out November 2001 in US.

...January 2002 was the worst month for the Gamecube in its entire history.

The Wii U still did worse than the Gamecube.

well I don't think February will be any better...could be worse. It's a software wasteland this month for wiiu afaik. March will bring a boost since some solid software releases are taking place

I think the wii-u needs to release a game that looks clearly better than current gen consoles.

IMO nintendo should have done this at launch. Sort of as a tech demo to show people, this is a next gen console... The graphics card is more powerful.

There's other issues too, but launching it with current gen console ports that many don't look better than on the 360 or PS3. And their own games which aren't a technical marvel. Hurt them here I think.

I am not sure how trustworthy this old chart is, but it's the only sales data I found about the Gamecube:

That would put the WiiU in a similar position as the GC in it's third month but down MASSIVELY (~500k!) on the three months period.

And the WiiU's competition is nowhere near as fierce as the GC's was.

where PS3 at? over 200k?
