Forums - Sony - Stop calling the Origional playstation....PSX

PSX bugs me to. I have no idea where the X came from, it's PS1 for me, because PS for me refers to the entire Playstation brand.

PSX was the only abbreviation for the Playstation back when there was no PS2.

The PSX was not a console between the PS2 and 3, it was a DVR enabled PS2 released only in Japan. Everyone outside of Japan doesn't need to remember the PSX, it wasn't a world wide product.

There was no PS1, there was a PS and a PSone, but no PS1. PS-X was the internal development name for the PS and predated the PSone.

SCEA actually wanted to release the Playstation with the name PSX because they didn't like the name Playstation. I agree with them, to me it sounds like a Playschool toy for babies.

But anyway, we call it PSX because back in the 32bit days the vast majority called it PSX and the name stuck. Back then you either typed Playstation or PSX. All the magazines did it and so did those of us with dial up and a forum to post on.

Playstation is maybe the best console name ever(only rivaled by GameBoy). If Sony has done one thing right, it's to stick to that name. The Super Nintendo? The ... Mega Drive? The Atari 2600? The Xbox? The Nintendo 64? The Dreamcast? The Wii? The Wonderswan?

Consoles have dumb names, and the PlayStation name might not be cool, but it explains just what it is, contrary to those other names I just listed.

Yeah this has bugged me for a while. Great thread.

I always refer to it as the PS1, although "PSone" is reserved for that adorable redesign, but it's the same console.

I never liked the way the Gamecube was abbreviated "GCN" either. Couldn't call it the NGC though, probably because of the Neo Geo [Pocket] Color.

I caall it the PS one or the Original Playstation. But as an FYIPSX has been used since before the actual launch of the PSone. It was one of the "code names" beofre launch like Dolphin, Orbis, Durango etc. So maybe it is older people who tend to use the phrase who have been using it for many a year.and then after to differentiate from PS2 - as i often see it written but not often said

Systems owned

All the ones in read were/are my favourite.

I still think it's just a states thing, I've never heard it called that here

1) of course it was, how was it not? it wasnt a Playstation, it wasnt a PS2
2) Because it didn't launch anywhere else you want to deney its existance?
3)Exactly, internal development, you wont call the ps4 the orbis when it's released
4) Well tough titties its japans console and they can call it what the hell they wan't and they did.......... Playstation (not PSX)

It's a PS2 not a PS2.5. You can consider it a DVR witha PS2 stuffed in it or a PS2 with a DVR stuffed in, but either way it's just a DVR enabled PS2 not a seperate console like the PSX, PS2, PS3, PSP, and PSV.

Lots of products only release in Japan and most people don't give much thought to them. The rest of the world can pretty much pretend that it never happened.

It started as a interntal development name but it spread so far into print media that it permiated our culture and became the most common nickname for the Playstation. You don't have to like it, but it's true. The vast majority called it PSX and it stuck. Deal with it. Nobody is going to call the PS4 Orbis because it wouldn't be an abbreviation of Playstation 4. But if it turns out to be called Playstation Orbis, we might all call it Orbis as much as we call it PSO.

SCEA didn't like it so they probably pushed PSX to American media.

I see so many of these people on Youtube too. It's like they're excited to know something others don't, but if you're old enough to remember calling the PlayStation the PSX, you're also probably old enough to have read about the Japan-only PSX in EGM.

Also you say PSOne is an acceptable term, but that's the name of the redesign.

Wouldn't PSX be PlayStation 10?

So it's like the American Godzilla movie? It happened, but generally denied by the populous.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.
