It's easy to avoid confrontation/arguments with religious folks - simply tell them you aren't religious. It shouldn't impact your family or friends if you're atheist though.

I think so, too. I have a suspicion that a lot of atheists who claim that the Christians in their lives are all out to get them are actually the ones who are instigating most of the confrontations, probably by lecturing and attacking the beliefs of others like so many internet atheists love to do.

I mean, I live in the Bible belt and I have literally never had a single confrontation over my lack of belief. Granted, it's not something I talk about a lot because what is there to say on the matter? "I don't believe in this thing that I've never seen" is pretty much where it begins and ends for me. In the absence of any evidence to the contrary, there isn't much more to say let alone to get in a fight about.

In all of my time on VGC, I have never seen an atheist attacking religious people. True story.

It means then that you haven't read a lot of the religious threads on VGC, and if your story be true then my statement is fact.

I'm not bashing atheists.  I am objecting to your definitions and presumptions.  Question:  Are you a fan of the Red Soxs or Yankees?  Answer:  I'm not sure, I don't know what I believe... I have not seen proof that either team is worth my support.  Conclusion:  You default to a Yankees fan unless you say otherwise.

Your comparision to goblins in the earth is poor.  We, as humans have a great understanding of what is in the earth, what it is made of.  We have little understanding of what the universe is, it's origins, and the purpose of life.  Contrary to what Star Trek will have you believe, even those of us who really understand advance scientific ideas don't understand much.  We don't even know what gravity is, only what it does.

If you want to say the default answer is "I don't know?", I could say maybe.  I honestly think it's different for every person. I would definitly say that the answer for ALL people is not "I don't know but most likely no God". I think you are placing your personal beliefs and values on others. We are all very different.

Oh, and the quote button doesn't work on any of my PC's. It only works on my phone. Any idea how I can make it work? I always get errors.

Wow, you're comparing 2 tangible, real things to something that isn't real or tangible. Astonishingly ignorant.

His comparison of goblins is excellent. How do you know there aren't goblins in there? Do we know anything about goblins? Can they withstand the immense heat?

You can't disprove the existence of anything. That's his point. Disprove that there are tiny, insivisble, undetectable creatures flying around your face at this very moment. The default of "I don't know" I suppose I can agree with. It's fair. It's how you start anything - is the ball red? I don't know, let me look at the ball, okay yes it looks red, so it's red. No it does not look red, it is not red.

Your response calling me ignorant is actually ignorant, which is great ironic humor. I was not comparing teams. I was comparing faith in teams. People cheer for teams, generally, not because of how good the team is. Occassionally it's because of how they play the game or what player they have. But ususually its because of where they are born, the colors of the uniforms or something else that appeals to them intrinsically.

This is true of people of faith in God or faith in lack of God.

I stopped believing in god around the same time I stopped believing in the tooth fairy and the easter bunny, that was when i began to understand logic and reason.

Nice, you addressed 1/3 of my post. Bravo. Fanhood is not the same. End of.

I was referring to "Many people I know with this "faith" are difficult to deal with when it comes to spiritual/life-meaning discussions. They are condescending to people who have spiritual beliefs, thinking they believe in fairy tales." Don't see how that is objecting to my definitions and presumptions, the rest of the post is though.

What dsgrue said (to an extent) + Nobody is born a Yankees fan, but we are all Atheists at birth, which I'd say helps solidify it as the default position to take.

Your comparision to goblins in the earth is poor.

No it isn't, it's totally valid. Even if we could say with 100% certainty that the inner core of the Earth is a giant mass of iron that couldn't support life whatsover, I could easily just say these are magical goblins that defy all laws of the universe. Can you disprove that? No. See previous reply.

I agree, in the grand scheme of things we know jack shit. This doesn't invalidate my comparison, if anything it strengthens it.

Where have I said that's what everyone believes? "I think by default people are atheists, or agnostic atheists." =/= everyone is an atheist or agnostic atheist. Right now, the default position is not the position most people take. Maybe I am speaking a tad authoritatively on behalf of atheists, but not anyone else.

Sorry, can't help you there. Try talking to an admin maybe. http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/members.php?name=&gender=&keyword=&country=&type=Site+Admin&order=Last+logged+in

Fascinating. A conversation with a devout atheist about said atheism is the same as a conversation with a devout person of any belief or other faith in an ideal. I learn so much from this site every day!

If this is referring to me, please don't label me a "devout" atheist. I've not labelled you once, and you have no clue what the full extent of my beliefs are. No need to get personal.

Are you an atheist?

I was raised Christian. I started doubting Christianity around 16 or 17 years old. I picked variation things from other religions and made my own. Buddhism probably has the most influence on my own religion.  I'm happy with what I believe in.  Perhaps there is a God but I don't believe in a heaven or hell.  For that I believe more in reincarnation and you having a shitty next life if you were shitty this life, etc.
