Forums - Gaming - Is it possible that no amount of quality and marketing could help a niche title get more sales?

When a title ends up having disappointing sales, the two reactions are to say it sucked quality wise, or wasn't marketed properly?  Isn't it possible that a title is niched, and no matter how well it is done, and how brilliantly it is marketed (you know, have the title get a bunch of advertising and generate a lot of buzz plus get large distribution), it is only going to sell X?

Or, does anyone here that proper execution and marketing can make any title become a 10 million+ seller?

So, pretty much everyone things their interests could have mass appeal if have sufficient quality and marketed correctly?

Just look at Minecraft, when Notch (who was Notch back then?) released an alpha of a game with terrible graphics allowing you to change the environment by smashing blocks and adding them somewhere else - would YOU have thought it would become one of the biggest games of the last two years?

Look at Gangnam style, did you think that the most non-mainstream of all K-Pop was gonna be a world hit?

Some niche anythings can randomly explode. (Minecraft, Angry Birds, blab blah)

Things can randomly start trending. It just has to hit the market at the right time.

But, niche titles are niche for a reason. Somethings just never grow out of that stage.

yes you are correct. like LBPkarting. Sony marketed the hell out of that game, only for it to do no better then Sony all staz which i saw not 1 commercial for.

both just over 500K, i'd like to think Sony All Starz could have sold 1m but again, it's a nichie title, and while possible, it's not likely. but it had a better chance then LBPK.

Anything can, but it doesn't mean everything can.  People seem to think it is predictable, particularly the likes that make sure Michael Pachter is able to make a living.

I think games can slowly build a steady following. Look at FE:A. It's one of Nintendo's most niche franchises, and yet they put out a great title, advertised it well, and it's doing better than any other game in the franchise.

Niche titles can become steadily more successful, it just takes a lot of effort, and time.
