Is it possible that no amount of quality and marketing could help a niche title get more sales?

Just look at Minecraft, when Notch (who was Notch back then?) released an alpha of a game with terrible graphics allowing you to change the environment by smashing blocks and adding them somewhere else - would YOU have thought it would become one of the biggest games of the last two years?
