Forums - Gaming - Tomb Raider and The Last Of Us Define A New Genre of Gaming

You really see no similarities between TR and UC? Platforming action-adventure, augmented with some mystery (artifacts and stuff), well-defined protagonist, shooting-action (althoug, like I said, evolved) and puzzle-solving. UC is however adjusted to nowadays gaming (no real life-bar, hiding to regenerate, overall quite easy) and has a lot more cut-scenes which was also introduced in TR1 (or so I think - perhaps RE1 was first with in-game 3d graphics-engine, that's too far away from me now).

lol I can list to you 70% of the games have these same similarities.

OFF. It's the same hack I give you the list of the PS3 that works... just look your own wiki site (PS3 dev wiki?)

But the way they did it in UC *is* similar to TR. Really, this is useless as you just don't want to see it. Doesn't change the fact but it's strange that ppl defend UC so much - relying on TR is no disadvantage.

To OFF:  Well, seems the new ones have to be altered using hardware-flasher if I read correctly.

Yeah he's in denial.

Tomb Raider is basically another Unchartedized action game, just like Dead Space 3, Splinter Cell Blacklist etc. Even the multiplayer is a straight copy of UC.

Nevertheless, I'll still get the game day 1.

There is a difference between inspiration and copying. I'm sure Tomb Raider had some impact on the original Uncharted, but it wasn't just like it (in fact, Uncharted had an emphasis on action/Tomb Rider on exploration and puzzles). They were very different.

Fast forward 5.5 years and Tomb Raider seems to have an identity crisis. You cannot swim (a first for the series), too many parts of the game seem straight out of Uncharted 2, and the graphics, since E3 2011, don't look as sharp.

I was hooked from here on, which, at the time, felt very little like Uncharted. Beyond that, the visuals were at their best.

I found to be extremely weird that she couldn't swim because isn't she suppose to be just coming of some sort of military school.  I feel like she would learn to swim there.   I still think it looks good and have it on preorder, but if it doesn't get as good of reviews as I'm hoping then I'm gonna cancel it.

OT,  I can only see The Last of Us being genre defining, and like others said Tomb Raider is completely ripping off Uncharted's style, but I'm hopefully getting it regardless.

I have no idea if Tomb Raider inspired Uncharted or not. Literally, no idea. Zero.

However, the concept a lot of people are advancing that it HAD to have inspired Uncharted is really confusing. Fiction is rife with treasure hunter based works. People do realize that, right? Never mind Indiana Jones and the dozens of film inspired by that (The Mummy, National Treasure, Romancing the Stone, et cetera), you could go back to The Treasure of the Sierra Madre or even The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly if you wanted. With literature, you can obviously go back even further, with Sinbad and Treasure Island being examples off the top of my head.

Actually, looking it up, I found this on Wikipedia, "The production staff drew inspiration from the pulp adventure genre when creating the video games in the Uncharted series, and based Drake on the stereotypical characters of adventure films and novels, giving him wit, resourcefulness, and strong principles," though the linked source page is gone.

It also turns out that The Lord of the Rings was a big influence and that Uncharted was originally designed to be a fantasy adventure. Interesting stuff.

Regardless, insisting that Uncharted is based on Tomb Raider seems like a huge assumption to me, given that Tomb Raider itself is hardly a defining work.

Agreed. The Last Of Us, like Heavy Rain, seems to be dabbling with old and new genre combinations. Is it better for gaming, no way to know, but it's in my realm of intrigue.

As for TR's pre-order, I did it on Steam. If it ends up "bad", it will be my first and last through them.

I'm hoping it turns out to be better for gaming, so developers can work to add great stories into their games.  If TLOU ends up being a huge hit then you can bet there will be so many trying to copy them and get the same success, which would be bad for gaming.

The Last Of Us is going to do strong numbers, I just sense it. The last time I felt this strong about a sales prediction, the game exceeded my expectations by nearly a million. This is going to be at least a 4 million seller!

Which game was it that exceeded your expectations?  Uncharted 2?  I actually am thinking 4.5mil - 5mil and a 95 metacritic

Nah, Heavy Rain. So much pre-release doubt, so much crow to feed.

Oh yeah for sure.  I didn't expect much sales from it either.  Game was fantastic and deserves every sale.
